Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League, announced Wednesday the 42 players who have been invited to attend Canada's national men's summer under-18 team selection camp, and the list includes Edmonton Oil Kings defenceman Griffin Reinhart.
The under-18 selection camp runs from July 30 to August 2 at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena in Calgary, home of Canada's national teams. The roster includes four goaltenders, 14 defencemen and 24 forwards. Of the 42 players invited to camp, 22 will be selected for Canada's national summer U-18 squad, which will compete at the 2011 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament, scheduled August 8-13 in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
"This selection camp will be competitive and exciting," said Hockey Canada Head Scout Kevin Prendergast, who led the selection process. "These players represent the future of Canadian hockey and are a testament to the strength of the Canadian Hockey League and the skill development taking place in minor hockey associations across the country."
Reinhart, 17, was the Oil Kings' first-round selection (third overall) at the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft. He completed his first season in the Western Hockey League this year, earning rookie of the year honours with the Oil Kings, as he scored six goals and 19 assists for 25 points to go along with a plus-seven rating in 45 games. Unfortunately, the blue-liner missed seven weeks of action during the second half of the season due to injury, shortening his freshman campaign.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Reinhart, a native of West Vancouver, B.C., already represented Hockey Canada earlier this year, competing for Team Pacific at the World Under-17 Challenge. Team Pacific captured the bronze medal, as Reinhart scored one goal and six assists in six games at the tournament, in addition to serving as the team captain.
Should Reinhart make Canada's national U-18 summer squad, he will follow in the footsteps of two Oil Kings teammates who have competed at past Ivan Hlinka tournaments. Defenceman Mark Pysyk led Team Canada to gold at the 2009 competition, while dual citizen defenceman Keegan Lowe captured silver with the United States in 2010.
Hockey Canada's U-18 camp roster includes 19 players from the Ontario Hockey League, 15 from the Western Hockey League, six from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, one from the Central Canada Hockey League (Junior A) and one from the Ligue de hockey midget AAA du Qubec. In total, 37 players (two goaltenders, 14 defencemen and 21 forwards) competed at the 2011 World Under-17 Challenge.
