Ontario Reign News Release
Ontario, CA - The Ontario Reign, proud American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL), visit the Iowa Wild tonight at 5:00 p.m. PT at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. Tonight is the first of two meetings between the two clubs this season.
Home Sweet Home:
Waterloo, Iowa, native Cal Petersen returns to his home state for the first time as a professional and is expected to make his debut in goal for the Reign tonight. Cal attended Notre Dame for three seasons, helping the Fighting Irish to the NCAA Frozen Four last season and served as team captain. While in Waterloo, he skated for the Black Hawks of the USHL for three seasons (2011-2014).
Familiar Face:
Reign forward and team captain Brett Sutter skated with the Wild from 2014-2016, appearing in 128 games scoring 43 points (16 goals, 27 assists) and dressed in six games with Iowa's NHL affiliate, the Minnesota Wild, adding three assists.
Pro Debuts Out of the Way:
Reign forwards Spencer Watson, Bokondji Imama and defenseman Sean Walker each made their professional debuts last Saturday in the Reign's season-opening contest against the San Antonio Rampage.
In No Rush:
Reign Head Coach Mike Stothers is one loss away from 100 in his pro head coaching career. In 293 games behind the bench, Stothers is 161-99-33.
History vs. Iowa:
The Reign are 2-0-0 all-time vs. Iowa and 1-0-0 at Wells Fargo Arena. The Reign defeated the Wild in their first-ever meeting on November 12, 2016 by a final of 6-5 in the shootout in Des Moines. The Reign erased a two-goal deficit in the contest and snapped a three-game skid. Forward Mike Amadio scored a goal and an assist and forwards Justin Auger and Andrew Crescenzi each scored a goal. On February 15, the Reign completed the season sweep with a 3-1 win at Citizens Business Bank Arena. Former Wild forward Brett Sutter scored a goal and an assist and goalie Jack Campbell made 20 saves. This season, the Reign complete the season series on February 3 in Ontario.
Reign vs. Central Division:
The Reign have had success against the Central Division over the past two seasons, holding a 12-3-1-0 record. The Reign went 6-1-1-0 against the Central Division last season with tilts against Iowa, Charlotte and Rockford and earned a 6-2-0-0 record in 2015-16 with appearances against Manitoba and Charlotte.
