Reign Rally in Third Period; Claim Point in OT Setback to Checkers

Charlotte, N.C. - The Ontario Reign (30-18-10-0) erased a two-goal deficit with a pair of third-period tallies, but the Charlotte Checkers (30-27-4-0) prevailed in overtime, 3-2, at Bojangles' Coliseum Saturday evening.

Both teams traded scoring chances in the opening period, but remained scoreless through 20 minutes. Checkers forward Patrick Dwyer rang the crossbar above Reign netminder Jeff Zatkoff (OTL, 25 saves on 28 shots) and the Reign generated multiple rebounds off the pads of Checkers goalie Tom McCollum (W, 24 saves on 26 shots).

Former Reign forward Kris Newbury opened the scoring early in the second period, lifting in his 10 goal of the season and second against the Reign at 2:59. Checkers forward Andrew Miller made it 2-0 off a breakaway at 12:50 sliding a backhanded shot under the right pad of Zatkoff.

Forward Sean Backman cut the lead in half early in the third period, deflecting in his 12 goal of the season at 1:02. Vincent LoVerde and Mike Amadio picked up the assists. After multiple scoring chances, Reign forward Jonny Brodzinski reset the contest and setup overtime with a power-play goal at 16:22 with help from Teddy Purcell and LoVerde. In the extra skate, Checkers winger Connor Brickley banked a shot past Zatkoff to snatch the victory. The Reign finished the game 1-for-2 on the power play while the Checkers did not receive a man-advantage opportunity.
