Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, defeated the Texas Stars on Saturday in front of 14,317 fans at The Q by a final score of 6-3. With the win, the Monsters improved to 28-27-3-4 overall this season and with a .508 points percentage, remain alone in sixth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
Texas stormed out of the gate on Saturday with three first-period goals, from Matej Stransky at even-strength at 4:59, from Brandon DeFazio on the power-play at 12:00, and a five-on-five Caleb Herbert score at 17:43, to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
In the middle frame, Cleveland battled back with a Marc-Andre Bergeron power-play goal at 7:24, assisted by Sonny Milano and Dean Kukan, and a memorable Milano marker at even-strength that saw the former Columbus Blue Jackets first-round pick bank a shot from below the goal line off the back of Texas net-minder Justin Peters' helmet at 14:03 with Joe Pendenza and Markus Hannikainen notching assists on the play.
In the third, the Monsters drew even courtesy of a five-on-five breakaway finish from Jordan Maletta at 7:28 on Jaime Sifers' lone feed, then Cleveland claimed the lead for the first time at 15:07 of the frame thanks to a T.J. Tynan assist, a fortuitous bounce of the dasher-boards, and an even-strength goal from Ryan Craig. The Monsters went on to add empty-net scores from Milano at 18:29 and Zac Dalpe at 19:35 to claim a cathartic 6-3 victory in front of their second-largest home crowd of the campaign in dramatic fashion.
Anton Forsberg stopped 19 of the 22 shots he faced to improve to 19-15-3 in net for Cleveland while Justin Peters stopped 34 of 38 pucks to fall to 13-16-2 between the pipes for Texas this year.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Tuesday home clash vs. the Chicago Wolves with full coverage, live from The Q, underway at 7:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
