Ontario Reign News Release

ONTARIO, Calif.- The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, have continued their involvement in the National Education Association's Read Across America literacy movement this with special appearances to schools in the Inland Empire.

School-aged children had the opportunity to meet the players as they read to different classes and assemblies to promote the importance of education and increase reading awareness. They also had an opportuntiy to get to know each player during the question and answer part of the visits.

The team traveled to schools in Fontana, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga and Riverside with special autographed books and team schedules for the children. The players read, answered questions, and explained the game of hockey to the children.

Read Across America week is typically celebrated during the week of March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author, Dr. Seuss. Athletes, actors, police officers, firefighters, and more make the time to visit schools and take part in various activities to develop an excitement for reading. Some initiatives that have been started include offering reading challenges and milestones to local students for special prizes and rewards.

The Reign have been a part of Read Across America since their Inaugural season in 2008-09 and every year try to visit as many classrooms as possible. This season Dr. Seuss' birthday fell on a Reign home game, so the local schools scheduled our team to read to their students throughout that same week. Many of the schools the team visited celebrated by hosting their own special night at a Reign home game with certain percentages of the ticket sales benefitting the schools.
