Ontario Reign News Release
San Jose, CA - Defenseman Vincent LoVerde scored 23 seconds into overtime to help the Ontario Reign (36-14-4-1) over the San Jose Barracuda (26-21-7-3) 3-2 Wednesday night at SAP Center. With the win, the Reign improved their unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1-0).
The Barracuda jumped on the scoreboard first as forward Jeremy Langlois snapped a rebound over the glove of Reign netminder Peter Budaj (W, 28 saves on 20 shots) at 12:25 of the first period.
In the second period, the Reign responded on the power play as forward Michael Mersch deflected a shot from forward Sean Backman past Barracuda goalie Joel Rumpel (OTL, 13 saves on 16 shots) at 12:54 for his team-leading 22nd goal of the season. Defenseman Kevin Gravel picked up the second assist.
Forward Adrian Kempe put the Reign in front with a man-advantage marker at 10:21 of the third period, blasting a shot past Rumpel from Gravel and Backman. With Rumpel off for the extra attacker, the Barracuda forced overtime as forward Bryan Lerg tipped in a centering pass with 33 seconds to play.
In the extra session, LoVerde chipped in a Mersch pass over the right pad of Rumpel for the game-winning goal just 23 seconds in. The Reign finished the contest 2-for-4 on the power play while the Barracuda went 0-for-5.
