March 17, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Rampage (24-32-8-0) opened a two-game California road trip with 6-2 loss to the San Diego Gulls (32-20-2-2) on Wednesday night. Mikko Rantanen broke the Rampage's rookie points record with his 51st point of the season, but the game was dominated by the Gulls, who had four players record multiple-point games.
Chris Wagner got the Gulls on the board first, but the Rampage answered less than three minutes later when Garry Nunn recorded his second goal of the season since signing a professional tryout contract with San Antonio on March 8. With the primary assist on the tally, Mikko Rantanen surpassed Chad Kolarik for the most points recorded by a rookie in franchise history. Rantanen's 51st point topped Kolarik's record of 50 set in the 2008-09 season.
The second period was dominated by San Diego, who got goals from Ondrej Case, Brandon Montour and Nic Kerdiles to take a 4-1 lead into the second intermission.
Less than a minute into the third frame, Chris Mueller notched his 18th goal of the season and third in the season series against the Rampage to extend the Gulls' lead to four. Brian McGrattan's eighth of the season at 3:51 marked the Gulls' fifth unanswered and made it a 6-2 game.
Cody Corbett chipped into the Silver and Black's deficit with a power-play goal late in the stanza, but San Antonio was unable to generate any more offense, falling 6-2.
The Rampage finished 1-for-3 on the power play and outshot the Gulls 37-33.
Lineup Notes
Garry Nunn moved up to the Rampage's top line, playing with Mikko Rantanen and Dennis Everberg. Joey Hishon returned to the lineup and played on the second line with Andrew Agozzino and Borna Rendulic. Reto Berra started in net, but after suffering a lower-body injury, was replaced by Roman Will in the second period.
