Seattle Reign FC News Release
SEATTLE (July 31, 2015) - Seattle Reign FC (8-3-3, 27 pts) will try to extend its winning streak to three games on Saturday, August 1 at 1 p.m. PT in a matchup with the Boston Breakers (3-8-3, 12 pts) at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Allston, Mass.
Reign FC is coming off a 3-0 victory over Portland Thorns FC last Sunday at Memorial Stadium, propelled by two goals in a five-minute span out of halftime from forward Beverly Yanez to cushion what had been a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
Midfielder Jessica Fishlock also scored in the win, while midfielder Kim Little had two assists. Yanez took home NWSL Player of the Week honors for her efforts, and is now second in the NWSL in scoring with eight goals, while Little leads the league in assists with six.
Sunday's win also extended Seattle's home league unbeaten streak to 20 games, dating back to the start of the 2014 season when the team moved to Memorial Stadium. Reign FC is currently atop the NWSL standings in first place with 27 points, one-point ahead of the Chicago Red Stars, while the Breakers are in last place with 12.
Reign FC announced today that the club has signed goalkeeper and University of Oregon alumna Abigail Steele.
Steele will provide additional roster depth as goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer recovers from a foot injury sustained during the 3-0 win over the Portland Thorns on July 26.
Reign FC recently announced the signing of goalkeeper Caroline Stanley following news that goalkeeper Hope Solo would need time to recover from an injury during her time with the U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) during the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada.
Steele, 21, is a 2014 graduate from the University of Oregon where she played four seasons with the ducks. In her senior season with the Ducks, she allowed eighteen goals and earned Pac-12 honorable mention selection.
Boston is coming off a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Sky Blue FC last Saturday. The Breakers have lost five of their last six matches, and have not picked up three points since a 1-0 win over FC Kansas City on May 30.
The Breakers are led by defenders Mollie Pathman and Kassey Kallman, and midfielder Kristie Mewis, the only three players on the roster to start all 14 games this season. Mewis also leads the team with four goals, while forwards Stephanie McCaffrey and Morgan Marlborough have three.
Boston's roster also sports several players making their way back from World Cup action. That includes U.S. Women's National Team goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, Australian forward Kyah Simon, Mexican defender Bianca Sierra, and Brazilian forward Rafaela.
Saturday's match is the second of three regular season games between Reign FC and the Breakers. On June 21, Seattle knocked off Boston 3-1 at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium, with Yanez, Fishlock, and Little all notching goals in the victory. The two sides will square off again on August 26 at 7 p.m. PT on the Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium.
