ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL ¬â¢s Los Angeles Kings, fought back to defeat the Idaho Steelheads 4-3 in overtime before 6,644 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena Wednesday night. Kyle Kraemer finished with two goals, including the game-winning goal.
Kraemer tallied his ninth goal of the season at 15:50 of the first period, as Dusty Collins ¬â¢ pass put Kraemer one-on-one against Idaho goalie, Jase Weslosky, and Kraemer delivered. The shot caught a piece of Weslosky ¬â¢s jersey as it passed under his arm, but had enough behind it to put the Reign up 1-0.
Justin Taylor extended the Reign lead to 2-0 with his fifth goal of the season at 7:25 of the second period. Chaz Johnson deflected an Idaho clearing attempt to Taylor who fired a laser into the top right corner of the cage. Johnson ¬â¢s assist on the play pushed his point streak to seven games, during which he ¬â¢s racked up eight points (5g,3a).
Mike Zacharias had turned aside the first 29 shots he faced, but Idaho scored on its next three shots to take a 3-2 lead. A power-play goal by Cody Purves at 19:05 got Idaho on the board, Mark Derlago tied it nine seconds later, and Junior Lessard put the Steelheads in front at 1:52 of the third. Jordan Morrison ¬â¢s 15th goal of the season at 15:10 sent the game into overtime. Morrison controlled a rebound and lifted the puck out over a pileup in front of the net.
Idaho was signaled for a penalty half way through overtime and the Reign got Zacharias on the bench and an extra skater on the ice. Jordan Hill ¬â¢s slap shot fell into the crease and trickled towards the goal line, where Kraemer smacked it across to give Ontario the 4-3 win.
Zacharias had 36 saves in the win, while Weslosky saved 22 in the loss.
Tonight's three stars were: 1. ONT - Kyle Kraemer 2. ONT - Jordan Morrison 3. IDH - Junior Lessard
