Reed, Mitsui Lead the Way to Hops Win
August 25, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Hillsboro Hops News Release
HILLSBORO, OR - That's more like it.
After dropping five of their last six - and the one win a 2-1 scrape on a late single - Hillsboro got back to who they are. Cody Reed started and dominated, and an early three-run home run by Trevor Mitsui proved to be the only runs necessary for the Hops to post a 3-0 victory over the visiting Tri-City Dust Devils.
Back to Reed. Hillsboro (37-28, 15-12) fans maybe didn't know what to expect after the burly southpaw couldn't escape the first inning last Thursday against Boise. He regained his swagger and reverted back to his first-half form, retiring the first thirteen batters he faced en route to 5.1 shutout innings.
He escaped trouble in the top of the fifth when Tri-City's (34-31, 12-15) Henry Charles slugged a ground-rule double and Nick Bilter followed with a walk. Reed induced an A.J. Kennedy pop out and a Mason Smith fly out to navigate away from danger.
Reversing the trend of falling behind early, the Hops got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first. After Reed sat down the first three Devils, Dansby Swanson and Grant Heyman walked with one out. Mitsui followed with a line-drive blast that just squeaked over the fence for a three-run home run and a long-awaited early lead.
Reed was stingy and wouldn't let Tri-City do anything. He was lifted after allowing a walk and a single in the sixth, but Ariel Hernandez entered and prevented any further damage. Hernandez has been excellent lately, allowing just one earned run in his last 7 outings, spanning 8.1 innings. He has struck out 15 over that period.
Justin Donatella was next to pitch, making his Hillsboro debut. The former UC-San Diego Triton dazzled in his first foray in the Northwest League, recording six straight outs in his two innings of work.
Taylor Clarke was given the save opportunity with a 3-0 lead, and his 19th inning of work on the season went a lot like his first 18 innings. He struck out two batters and got a pop out to shortstop to end the game and record a victory for the Hillsboro Hops. That's right - Clarke has not allowed a run, earned or otherwise, all season long.
We're back to the normal weeknight 7:05 starting time for the next two nights. Pregame radio is at 6:35 PM on Rip City Radio 620 AM and at www.ripcityradio.com.
