Hillsboro Hops News Release
HILLSBORO, OR - The Hops snapped a four-game losing streak on Sunday, hoping to spur a turnaround. The switch will have to be flipped tomorrow as Hillsboro was defeated again - the fifth loss in six game - by a 5-1 final score against the Tri-City Dust Devils. The first two games of the five-game set have been split.
Carlos Hernandez started for Hillsboro (36-28, 14-12) which gave the Hops plenty of optimism. He entered the start 2-0 at home with a 0.00 ERA with 33 innings of work. All good things must end, and Hernandez's streak met its conclusion in the top of the third inning.
Tri-City (34-30, 12-14) plated three against the spitfire Hernandez in the frame. Mitch Morales singled to center and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one down, Peter Van Gansen singled to right to move Morales to third. Ty France followed with an RBI groundout to score Morales and end Hernandez's streak. Then, with two outs, the Devils broke Hernandez's back with a clutch two-run double by Carlos Belen to score Van Gansen and Jose Carlos Urena.
The Dust Devils went back for more in the top of the fifth plating two more on a walk, triple, and double to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Hops offense wasn't stymied. They recorded nine hits on the evening, and three for extra bases. Unfortunately for the home team, they weren't strung together, and they couldn't muster any offensive momentum.
Their lone run was scored in the fifth when Sergio Alcantara singled with two outs, and Dansby Swanson drilled a triple to right-center field to score him. Swanson continues to rake, with hits in six straight to raise his average to .289 after a slow start to his professional career.
The final score of 5-1 was reached through five innings, but the Hops bullpen was a bright spot. Kirby Bellow threw two solid frames, and Will Landsheft, Ariel Hernandez, and Cameron Gann each hung zeroes to at least give the Hops a fighting chance.
It was unfortunately not in the cards for the Hops on Monday night.
Let's try again tomorrow, eh? Special early first pitch time at 1:35 PM tomorrow afternoon. Be sure to arrive early to see Portland Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Pregame radio is at 1:05 PM on Rip City Radio 620 AM.
