Lancaster Stormers News Release

The two longest tenured Lancaster Barnstormers combined to bring their club a huge win in the opener of a doubleheader Saturday evening at Constellation Field.

Nate Reed fired 6 1/3 innings, and Blake Gailen broke a scoreless deadlock with a home run in the top of the seventh inning as the Barnstormers won a tight pitchers' duel, 1-0, over the host Sugar Land Skeeters.

Until the seventh inning, the Barnstormers failed to get a runner to scoring position off Konner Wade (8-5). Then, with Gailen batting at 0-1, the Lancaster right fielder belted his 23rd homer of the season down the right field line, a rare right field home run at Constellation Field. Wade went the distance on a three-hitter with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Reed (11-3) ran into only minimal difficulty. He surrendered two singles in the first inning, the only two hits he allowed. The lefty walked three, including Denis Phipps leading off the seventh. He also struck out three, all in the first inning.

After Phipps reached, Luke Dykstra moved pinch runner Alvaro Rondon to second. Ross Peeples went to his bullpen for Huascar Brazoban. The new closer struck out pinch hitter Juan Silverio easily for the second out. Brazoban threw a wild pitch that moved Rondon to third. Daniel Robertson launched a drive to left field, but with the wind unusually blowing in from left, the ball was cut down and caught by Rico Noel on the track for the final out. Brazoban earned his second save.

The win cuts Lancaster's magic numbers for the wild card to nine over York and seven over New Britain. Lancaster has 16 games remaining on the schedule.

Stephen Johnson (3-0) will make a spot start for the Barnstormers in the nightcap against Michael Mariot (0-0).
