Indianapolis Indians News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Starter Todd Redmond struck out a season high 10 batters and allowed just one run on four hits over seven innings of work to outduel Tribe starter Jeremy Powell, who suffered the loss despite tossing 6.1 hitless frames as the Gwinnett Braves defeated the Indianapolis Indians 2-1 on Wednesday night at Coolray Field.
With the loss the Indians record now moves to 27-26 on the season, while the Braves improve to 24-28 with the victory. The win for Gwinnett also gives them a 4-3 series advantage with the season finale between the two clubs set to take place on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
Redmond (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 SO), who tossed a nine-inning no-hitter against Louisville in his last start, struck out at least one Tribe batter in six of his seven innings of work to earn the victory and improve to 5-5 on the season. The right hander's only blemish came in the third inning when Tribe RF Brandon Jones rifled a one-out triple to right and immediately came around to score on a double by 1B Brian Myrow.
Gwinnett relievers Michael Dunn (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 3 SO) and Craig Kimbrel (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) finished off the Indians in the final two innings as they combined to strike out five of the six batters they faced with Dunn earning his sixth hold of the season and Kimbrel notching his eighth save. Redmond, Dunn and Kimbrel combined to strike an Indians' opponent season-high 15 as five individual Tribe hitters struck out at least two times.
Despite allowing just one run through seven innings, Redmond still found himself trailing 1-0 as the game headed into the bottom of the seventh as his opposition, Powell (7.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO), held the Braves' offense hitless over the first 6.1 innings of the contest. However, everything fell apart for Powell one out into the seventh as he first lost his no-hit bid, when he surrendered a triple to Braves' 1B Barbaro Canizares, before then losing the lead and the game when the following batter, RF Mitch Jones, belted a two-run long ball to left field.
The two-run bomb by Jones was his team best 10th on the season and proved to be all the runs the Braves would need as despite collecting only three hits, they managed to come away with the 2-1 victory.
Tribe catcher Erik Kratz (2-for-4, 2 2B) turned in the only multi-hit effort on either side as he belted two doubles, including one to lead off the ninth. However, in what was a theme on the evening, the Indians' offense was unable to bring Kratz home in the final frame and ended up finishing the evening a disappointing 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
The two teams wrap up their four game series on Thursday June 3 at 7:05 p.m. RHP Brad Lincoln is expected to get the call for Indianapolis, while LHP Jose Ortegano is the probable starter for Gwinnett.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 p.m.
