Syracuse Mets News Release

Buffalo, N.Y. - Despite a nearly two hour rain delay on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Field the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, held on to beat the Buffalo Bisons by a score of 6-3 in front of an announced attendance of 4,890. The Chiefs did not collect a hit until the sixth inning but scored all of their runs in the final three innings to win game three of the four game series.

Buffalo (30-23) scored first in the ballgame on a Russ Adams double in the second inning to score Mike Jacobs. That hit came off of Syracuse starter Erik Arnesen who pitched four innings and gave up one run on two hits and struck out two.

In the fourth inning, Bisons starter Bobby Livingston was ejected from the game after hitting Chiefs first baseman Josh Whitesell in the head with a pitch. Home plate umpire Justin Vogel immediately ejected Livingston after the pitch and Mike O'Connor came on in relief.

After the fourth, torrential rains swept through Buffalo and forced a rain delay of one hour, fifty-eight minutes. The rain lasted for nearly fifteen minutes, but drenched the field and it had to be attended to by the grounds crew before play could continue.

In the fifth, the Bisons scored again when JR House, who was in the ballgame as a replacement for starting catcher Josh Thole, doubled to lead off. House came into the game after Thole was hit in the head by the backswing of Whitesell in the first inning. Herd shortstop Jordan Turner doubled in House to increase the lead to 2-0.

Syracuse (31-21) got its first hit of the game in the sixth with two outs on a single to right by Whitesell. The Chiefs scored for the first time in the seventh when three runs came across. Boomer Whiting was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Leonard Davis notched a sacrifice fly to push the Syracuse lead to 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Buffalo pinch hitter Valentino Pascucci hit a home run to right field to tie the game at 3.

Syracuse came back with three more runs in the eighth inning on a two-out three run triple from recent Class-A callup Boomer Whiting. The 27 year-old Whiting now has five RBI in three games at Triple-A this season after compiling two in twenty games with Class-A Potomac. The Chiefs led 6-3 heading to the bottom of the eighth and would hold on for the win.

Joel Peralta pitched the ninth inning for Syracuse and earned his 17th save of the season. Mike MacDougal (1-0), who was one of six pitchers used by Syracuse, earned the win by pitching the seventh inning despite allowing the home run to Pascucci. Manny Acosta (1-2) was the losing pitcher.

The game, spanning from Wednesday into Thursday, ended approximately five hours after the first pitch. The time of the game was three hours and three minutes.

On Thursday, the Chiefs will play the series finale against Buffalo. Stephen Strasburg (3-1, 1.27) is scheduled to make his final Triple-A start and will oppose Dillon Gee (6-1, 3.92). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
