Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Today's Game: The RedHawks will play two in Omaha starting at 4:05 p.m. The teams will first complete their game that started June 8, which was suspended in the first inning due to rain. The Storm Chasers lead that game 1-0 with two outs and runners on second and third. The teams will play their regularly scheduled game thereafter, but it will be a seven-inning game.
Last Game: The RedHawks rolled to a 6-1 win Monday against Omaha at Werner Park. OKC starting pitcher Brett Oberholtzer allowed just one run and one hit over six innings in his first start with the RedHawks since June 28. Oberholtzer tied a season high with nine strikeouts and retired the side in order five times as he won for the third time in three starts against Omaha. He combined with relievers Kevin Chapman and Jason Stoffel to hold Omaha to three hits and strike out 13. Tied 1-1 through five innings, the RedHawks scored the final five runs of the game. Oklahoma City took the lead for good in the sixth inning on a RBI triple from Ruben Sosa. The RedHawks then tacked on one run each in the seventh and eighth innings before plating two more in the ninth.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Asher Wojciechowski will head to the mound in the first game, aiming to add another dominant performance to his growing list...His 2.95 ERA ranks third in the league, while his 1.10 WHIP paces the PCL. His .201 opponent batting average ranks second in the league...He has not pitched since July 13. In a game at home against New Orleans, Wojciechowski allowed one run and five hits over six innings, but did not figure in the decision...He pitched one of the best games in RedHawks history July 8 in Round Rock when he fired a one-hit shutout and faced the minimum in a 5-0 victory. It was the first complete game, nine-inning shutout by a RedHawk since Luis Mendoza's no-hitter against Salt Lake Aug. 14, 2009. He also became the first RedHawks pitcher ever to face the minimum in a complete game...Over his past 20 innings, Wojciechowski has allowed just one run and he has faced the minimum in 14 of his last 17 frames...In two starts against Omaha this season, Wojciechowski has allowed one run and seven hits over 13 innings. During his last start at Werner Park on June 6, he allowed four hits over seven scoreless innings (ND).
Bobby Doran is slated to make his second Triple-A start in the second game...Doran also started the second game of a June 25 doubleheader against the Storm Chasers in OKC. He allowed three runs, six hits and walked two in 4.2 innings pitched in what was his Triple-A debut...Doran has spent most of this season with Double-A Corpus Christi, pitching in 22 games and starting 12. Overall he has a 3.17 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 88.0 total innings pitched. His ERA ranks currently seventh in the Texas League...Over his last four outings with the Hooks he has posted a 1.80 ERA. In each of his last three starts he has allowed one earned run, going 2-1.
Against the Storm Chasers: 2013: 7-5 2012: 6-10 All-time: 117-103 In OMA: 57-51
With six runs last night, the RedHawks equaled their run output from their entire first trip to Werner Park, June 6-9...The teams have combined for just one home run in four games at Werner Park...They split six games during their most recent series in Bricktown, June 22-25. The series was played in four days and featured two doubleheaders...Brandon Laird leads the RedHawks with eight RBI and tied for the team lead with four doubles against Omaha this season...Oklahoma City has outscored the Storm Chasers, 52-35...During the 2012 season series, Omaha averaged 6.9 runs per game, but so far in 2013 they have scored a total of 35 runs (2.92 RPG) and are batting .218...The RedHawks lead the all-time series, 117-103, but Omaha entered 2013 having won four of the last five season series against Oklahoma City.
Picking Up the Pieces: The RedHawks will resume and complete a game that was suspended in the first inning on June 8, trailing 1-0. After the RedHawks went down in order in the top of the inning, the Storm Chasers scored one run and had runners at second and third base with two outs. Chad Tracy was facing a 2-0 count when play was halted due to rain. Only three of the 10 RedHawks who started that game are currently still on the team.
Two'fer Tuesday: Although the RedHawks will play two games, today is technically not considered a doubleheader. After today, the RedHawks will have no outstanding games that must be made up. OKC is 10-5 on Tuesdays this season -- their best day of the week.
Road Warriors: The RedHawks have won four of five games on the current road trip, and they have won 11 of their last 15 contests away from OKC. Their 29 road wins are tied for second-most in the PCL and are most among American Conference teams.
Mound Magic: During the current road trip, the pitching staff has posted a 1.35 ERA (6 ER/40.0 IP) and allowed only one run in three of the five games.
Inside the Park: The RedHawks pitching staff has not allowed a homer in a season-best five-straight games. The last home run by an opposing player was by New Orleans' Jake Smolinksi in the first inning during the final game before the break. Thus, the RedHawks have not allowed a homer in 49 consecutive innings. The 80 dingers they've surrendered this season are second-least in the PCL.
The Laird Up There: Brandon Laird has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, going 10-for-29 (.345) with four extra-base hits and seven RBIs. He paces the team with 48 RBI and 24 doubles, tied for the team lead with 11 home runs, and second with 45 runs.
Springer Uncoiled: George Springer has cooled down a bit during the current road trip, going 4-for-18. Since June 28, he leads the PCL with eight home runs and 21 RBI and is third with a .380 average (27x71). He is also second overall in the Minors with 27 homers this season, trailing only Ryan Rua of Low-A Hickory, who has 28. Springer has also swiped 31 bases and is in striking distance of becoming the first player in the Minors to go 30/30 since Grant Desme in 2009.
