Oklahoma City Comets News Release

The Oklahoma RedHawks and the Oklahoma City Metro Area Salvation Army Command are teaming up to provide fans an opportunity to watch professional baseball free-of-charge with the donation of nonperishable food item. The RedHawks and the Salvation Army will be exchanging one general admission ticket for each person who provides a food item prior to the Thursday, May 15 game against the Memphis Redbirds.

The RedHawk wives, outfitted in their husband's batting practice jerseys, and Salvation Army officials will operate collection points on the main entrance plaza for the ticket-for-food exchange. Game time is set for 7:05 pm. but collection will begin at 6 p.m.

"We are excited to be partnering with the Salvation Army in this event," Debbie Jones, wife of Redhawks manager Bobby Jones, said. "Oklahoma City has been very supportive of the RedHawks and this is an opportunity for us to give something back."

All donated items will go to assist stocking the group's food pantry that assisted over 3500 families in the month of March.

The event is part of many activities planned in conjunction with Salvation Army Week which runs from May 12-16 across the Oklahoma City metro area. Monday the group invites area residents to tour the Metro Area Command Center and enjoy Indian Tacos provided by the Spanish Senior Center. An open house is planned for the area Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club on Wednesday. The week concludes with a "Thank You to Our Troops" as coffee and doughnuts will be served at Tinker Air Force Base.

The Salvation Army has been in Oklahoma City for 103 years. During that time, The Army has pursued a holistic approach in its humanitarian efforts - a belief that unless the most basic human needs of today are cared for, those helped will face even greater challenges taking care of their needs tomorrow.
