Fresno Grizzlies News Release

Fresno, CA - Whatever super powers the Fresno Grizzlies had on Friday's Superhero Night were not enough, as the Oklahoma RedHawks overcame any and all odds to hand the Grizzlies their second loss of the series, 7-3.

RedHawks starter Edinson Volquez (4-0) was masterful for six innings, allowing only one run on two hits. The Grizzlies managed to hit only three balls to the outfield against Volquez, a groundball base hit, a double and a fly out.

The double, which came courtesy of Lance "Colossus" Niekro, produced the only run for the Grizzlies (58-56), as the RedHawks (56-55) kept the thunder out of the Grizzlies' bats all night, giving up just four hits to Fresno, two of which came in the last two innings.

Oklahoma's offense, however, hit its stride early and often, as it scored two runs in each of the first three innings off of Fresno starter Matt "Superman" Palmer. RedHawks designated hitter Victor Diaz got the RedHawks on the board first, hitting a towering home run that carried over 450 feet.

Fresno wouldn't go down without a heroic stand though, as the Grizzlies put together a ninth inning rally, scoring two runs to cut the deficit to four runs. With a sacrifice fly in the ninth, Niekro finished the night with two hits and two RBIs, his first runs batted in since June 2.

Despite the superhero nicknames given to Grizzlies players before the game, the Grizzlies still came up short, as Palmer (9-7) took the loss for the Grizzlies.

Fresno outfielder Clay "Mr. Fantastic" Timpner also ended his streak of reaching base safely in all home games played in with a plate appearance at 38. Timpner went 0 for 4 on the night.

Tomorrow night's contest, the last in the series with Oklahoma, is another eventful evening as the Grizzlies will salute their parent club, the San Francisco Giants. To kick off the night, the first 2,500 fans will receive Tim Lincecum backpacks courtesy of Full Throttle. One in every 25 of the backpacks given away will contain an autographed baseball, some by former Grizzlies, Giants and a few by Lincecum himself. Also, the Grizzlies will be sporting Giants jerseys which will be available in a live auction following the game.

The Grizzlies will also host a tribute to the greatest American sandwich with Peanut Butter & Jelly Night on Saturday, as some lucky fans will receive all the ingredients to make their very own PB & J as they leave the ballpark.

Tickets are available at the Chukchansi Park ticket office, over the phone at 559-320-TIXS, or online at www.fresnogrizzlies.com.
