RH Brandon McCarthy (2-0, 2.35) vs. LH Doug Davis (no record)
TONIGHT: Brandon McCarthy comes off the disabled list to make the start in the second of a 4-game series at Nashville. The Sounds took the opener last night 10-4, halting OKC's 5-game winning streak. Seven of Nashville's runs came in its final 2 innings after Chad Tracy put OKC in front 4-3 with a 3-run homer in the seventh. McCarthy has been sidelined most recently with right shoulder inflammation. He made 2 relief appearances June 3 and 5 after a previous DL stint with a stress reaction in his right shoulder. McCarthy opened the year in the rotation, going 1-0, 2.51 in 4 April starts. Former RedHawk Doug Davis will make a rehab start for Nashville.
FINALLY A 10: The RedHawks became the last PCL team to allow double-digit runs in a game in last night's 10-4 setback. OKC had gone its first 66 games without surrendering double digits. The RedHawks had allowed a previous season-high 9 runs on 3 occasions. The 6-run losing margin was also an OKC high, surpassing the previous mark of 5, which had happened 3 times.
CHIPPING IN: Chris Davis has hit safely in 16 of 17 games this month and is batting .467 (28-for-60) with 3 homers and 13 RBIs in June. He's second in the league in batting average this month behind Fresno's Tyler Graham (.468), who did not play last night. For the season, Davis is tied for third in the PCL in hitting at .349 and tied for eighth in on-base percentage at .404.
MORELAND DRIVES IN ANOTHER: Mitch Moreland hit a solo home run in last night's second inning. He has driven in at least 1 run in 7 of the last 9 games, collecting 15 RBIs during that time. In June, Moreland is tied for second with Memphis' Allen Craig for the second-most RBIs in the league (17) behind Fresno's Brett Pill (20).
BIG FLIES CONTINUE: The RedHawks have homered in 6 straight games and are 27-12 when hitting at least 1 homer in a contest. They are 11-17 when homerless. All 4 runs last night were produced by homers. OKC has 63 home runs, fourth in the PCL. Sixteen homers this season have tied the score or given OKC the lead in the fifth inning or later, including a 3-run shot in last night's seventh by Chad Tracy to make the score 4-3 OKC. The RedHawks are 12-4 when hitting a game-tying or lead-taking homer in the fifth or later.
LEADERS: Brandon Boggs is fourth in the league in walks with 40. He's 10th in on-base percentage at .403 and has reached base in 23 straight games. Esteban German is fifth in walks with 37, plus being second in stolen bases (25) and third in runs (47). German had a league-best 22-game road on-base streak snapped with an 0-for-4 last night.
SALTY'S HOMER STREAK: Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered in each of the last 3 games he has played, all in the just-concluded series with New Orleans. Saltalamacchia is second on the team with 9 homers, with 6 against New Orleans, including each of his last 5. Eleven of his 21 RBIs have come against the Zephyrs.
WELCOME BACK NELLIE: Rangers outfielder and 2008 PCL MVP Nelson Cruz went 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored last night in his first game of a scheduled 3-game rehab stint. It's Cruz's second rehab assignment with OKC this season for injuries to both hamstrings. The 2009 American League All-Star played 2 games with the RedHawks May 11-12. Cruz has been on the 15-day DL since May 30 (retro May 29) with a left hamstring strain. He was on the DL from April 27-May 14 with a right hamstring strain. Cruz's bio is with the relievers on page 5.
TAKE YOUR BASE: OKC hitters have drawn the second-most walks in the PCL with 271, 8 fewer than Reno's league-leading 279.
PITCHING HOLDS ONTO TOP SPOT: Despite allowing a season-high 10 runs last night, OKC maintains the PCL lead in team ERA at 3.54. Iowa is second at 3.57. The RedHawks have allowed the fewest home runs in the league (33), 14 fewer than the closest team, Tacoma.
