Johnson Stumbles as Sky Sox Fall in Series Opener, 8-4
June 19, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Sky Sox lost their series opener to the 51s Friday night by a score of 8-4. Ace Alan Johnson struggled, allowing eight runs in 4.2 innings - his fourth consecutive rocky start.
Las Vegas jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Brett Wallace's groundball double play scored Jarrett Hoffpauir from third. The Sox seized the lead, however, in the bottom half of the frame on an Omar Quintanilla RBI double and Jay Payton RBI base hit; 2-1.
The match remained tight through the first three frames as neither team was able to score in either the second or third frames. Things changed in the fourth, however, as the 51s exploded for five runs.
Brett Wallace kicked off the action with a one-out single to left, while J.P. Arencibia doubled to right to advanced Wallace to third. Chris Lubanski added an RBI single on the next at-bat while Brian Dopirak added another following Lubanski, 3-2. The inning continued downhill from there, as a single, an error, and a double plated three more runs for Las Vegas. Holding a commanding 6-2 lead, it was all the scoring they would need.
Though the Sky Sox would attempt a comeback with scores in the fourth and ninth, it was to no avail as they ultimately fell by a final of 8-4. Las Vegas starter Mark Rzepczynski (2-3, 8.50) was credited with the win while Alan Johnson (6-3, 4.28) took the loss.
With the defeat, the Springs saw their record fall to 32-36, third place in the Pacific North. The two teams will face off again tomorrow night with the Springs' Josh Muecke (1-3, 6.50) facing off against Rommie Lewis (0-2, 6.10). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
