Tonight's Game-- After last night's rainout, a rested RedHawks team will begin a four-game series against the Tucson Padres at 7:05 p.m. Tonight is Devon Energy Hometown Heroes Celebration Night, as we honor our brave service men and women and their families.
Last Night-- Yesterday's game against Las Vegas was rained out. The game will not be made-up since the two teams are not scheduled to play each other for the rest of the season. Jordan Lyles tossed 6.2 scoreless innings, and a Brett Wallace solo homer proved the difference as the RedHawks beat Las Vegas 1-0 Thursday night. Lyles improved to 5-0 with another strong start, allowing eight hits and just one walk with six strikeouts in a 106-pitch effort. Xavier Cedeno followed Lyles with 1.2 innings, and Jose Valdez recorded the final two outs to earn his sixth save and complete the RedHawks' second shutout of the season. Wallace led off the third with a home run into the left field bleachers, his fourth of the season. The RedHawks were limited to just four hits, with none coming after the third inning. The 51s collected eight hits, but none were for extra bases and they left 10 runners on base. Las Vegas starting pitcher Tim Redding had his best game of the season, but took a tough-luck loss. Redding (0-3) allowed just one run and four hits over six innings with one walk and five strikeouts. He retired 10 of the last 11 hitters he faced.
Today's Probable Pitchers-- Paul Clemens looks to rebound after a couple of rough starts on the last road trip...On Monday, Clemens pitched on three days' rest and allowed eight runs and 10 hits in 3.1 innings against Omaha...Over his last two starts, he's surrendered 15 runs and 20 hits over just 5.1 IP...Prior to that, Clemens had been excellent, going 2-0 with a 2.05 ERA in his first four starts...Before his recent struggles, he also held a 1.08 WHIP and a .228 opponent batting average...Clemens is in his first full season with Houston after coming over as one of four players from Atlanta in exchange for Michael Bourn at last year's trade deadline...Lefty Colt Hynes makes his fifth start of the year and 11th overall appearance...He has struggled a bit as a starter, going 0-3 with a 7.53 ERA in four starts...Hynes does a good job keeping the ball in the park, as he surrendered his first home run of the season last time out, breaking a stretch of 26 innings without allowing a home run...He was born in Oklahoma City, but grew up in Texas and attended North Central Texas College and Texas Tech University.
It Only Takes One-- Thursday marked the first time since May 12, 2010 the RedHawks won by a 1-0 score (over Sacramento). They had five 1-0 losses in between the wins.
Streaks Snapped-- With the win Thursday, the RedHawks snapped their longest losing streak streak since August 25-31, 2007. The win also snapped Las Vegas' eight-game win streak.
Low Voltage-- The RedHawks scored just one run in each of their three games in the previous series against Las Vegas. Both teams combined for just nine runs total. Prior to the start of the Las Vegas series, the RedHawks had never been held to less than five hits in a game. On Wednesday they only had three hits, and Thursday they won despite just four hits.
Pitching With Purpose-- After taking some lumps on the road, the RedHawks pitching staff has been great this homestand. They have allowed just two runs over the last 26 innings, with just one earned run. Each starter has gone at least six innings, and the bullpen has surrendered one earned run in eight innings of relief. The RedHawks have also not given up a home run in three straight games, tying a season-best streak.
Saving the Day-- After closing out last Thursday's game, Jose Valdez is 6-for-6 in save opportunities this season. Last year he went 9-for-9.
Ruthless Ruggiano-- Over his last 10 games, Justin Ruggiano has caught fire, going 14-for-37 (.378) with three home runs and a remarkable 13 RBIs. Twice's he delivered go-ahead clutch hits with two outs in the ninth inning. Ruggiano went 0-for-3 Thursday to end an 11-game hit streak, the longest by a RedHawk this season. Ruggiano had some tough luck as Anthony Gose made a diving catch in his first at-bat, and Moises Sierra made a running catch on the warning track in his second at-bat.
You Better Think Twice-- The RedHawks have caught 18 of 39 attempted base stealers for a 46.2% caught stealing rate, easily the best in the PCL. (Sacramento is next at 41.2%.) Landon Powell ranks first in the league, going 8-for-14, and Carlos Corporan is second with a 10-for-25 mark.
Close Calls-- The RedHawks have eight one-run losses this season, the second-most in the PCL behind Iowa (10). Their four losses in extra innings are the most the PCL.
Against the Padres-- Since these teams are in opposing conferences, this will be the only series between the two clubs in 2012...Last season the RedHawks took three of four in Tucson, averaging eight runs per game and winning twice by eight runs...Drew Locke put up unreal numbers during last year's series: 8-for-17, three homers, three doubles and an eye-popping 14 RBIs...The last time the Padres' Triple-A affiliate visited OKC in 2010, they were the Portland Beavers.
