Today's Game: The RedHawks open a four-game series in New Orleans at 7 p.m. at Zephyr Field. This is the first of eight straight games against the Zephyrs, as both teams will travel to Oklahoma City to begin a four-game series Friday as well.
Last Game: The RedHawks posted their highest run total of the season, and the pitching staff held Round Rock to three hits in a 9-1 win Sunday at Dell Diamond. RedHawks starting pitcher David Martinez pitched five perfect innings and secured the win, retiring all 15 batters he faced. Second baseman Ronny Torreyes led OKC with three hits, including a double and two RBI, while first baseman Jon Singleton had three RBI. The RedHawks built a 9-0 lead through eight innings. They took advantage of an Express error in the first inning to score two runs. A Torreyes double brought home two more in the fifth. A solo home run by Gregorio Petit and a RBI single by Japhet Amador pushed the RedHawks ahead, 6-0, in the seventh. A two-run single by Singleton and a RBI double from Amador closed out the scoring for OKC in the eighth. Round Rock broke up the shutout with a two-out RBI by double by Brent Lillibridge in the ninth inning.
Deja Vu All Over Again: Yesterday was not the first time David Martinez threw five perfect innings, only exit the game due to the format of the tandem pitching rotation used in the Astros player development system. While pitching for Double-A Corpus Christi on April 20, 2013 against Frisco, Martinez also retired all 15 batters he faced before reaching his innings limit. Frisco's first baserunner of the day came in the seventh inning on a Jared Hoying double. Round Rock's first baserunner yesterday came in the sixth inning on a double by...Jared Hoying.
Today's Probable Pitchers: Mike Foltynewicz is scheduled to make his second appearance of the season for the RedHawks and his first start of 2014. Foltynewicz made his Triple-A debut in Round Rock Thursday, entering the game in the sixth inning and allowing two hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 3.1 shutout innings...He spent the majority of 2013 with Double-A Corpus Christi after starting the year at High-A Lancaster. With Corpus Christi, Foltynewicz went 5-3 with three saves and a 2.87 ERA and .207 opponent average in 23 games (16 starts). He was named a Midseason and Postseason All-Star in the Texas League...According to Baseball America, he touched 100 mph more frequently than any other minor leaguer...In 2012, he was named the Astros organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Year and the South Atlantic League's Most Outstanding Pitcher, going 14-4 with a 3.14 ERA with Low-A Lexington...Foltynewicz was selected with the 19th overall pick in the 2010 draft by Houston from Minooka Community High School in Illinois.
Rudy Owens is scheduled to follow Foltynewicz...In his first outing of 2014 Thursday at Round Rock, he started the game and threw four innings, allowing three hits and five runs, with two walks and seven strikeouts. All five of the runs allowed came in the second inning, including a grand slam by Bryan Petersen. Outside of that inning, he retired all nine batters he faced. The seven strikeouts also tied the most he's had in a game while pitching for OKC (13 G)...Owens had an injury-shortened 2013 season. He made four appearances with OKC before suffering a stress fracture in his left foot, and he did not pitch after April 22. In his very abbreviated season, Owens finished 0-3 with a 3.71 ERA...To make up for lost time, he went on to pitch in the Dominican Winter League for the Gigantes de Cibao, going 3-2 with a 2.68 ERA in 10 starts. He led the league in innings (53.2), strikeouts (49) and WHIP (0.99) and held opponents to a .191 batting average...Owens was acquired by Houston from Pittsburgh as part of a trade for Wandy Rodriguez in July, 2011. The lefty was Pittsburgh's Minor League Pitcher of the Year in both 2009 and 2010.
Against the Zephyrs: 2014: 0-0 2013: 8-8 All-time: 132-121 In NO: 59-66
The RedHawks and Zephyrs have split their previous two season series, going 8-8 against each other in 2013 and 2012...New Orleans outscored Oklahoma City, 64-59, last season. Each team had 134 hits in the season series...Jonathan Villar led the RedHawks with 13 hits and seven RBI in 11 games against the Zephyrs in 2013...After the teams play four games against each other in New Orleans, both squads travel to Oklahoma City for the RedHawks first homestand of the season April 11-14.
Super Series: This will be the only time this season the RedHawks will play back-to-back series against the same opponent. Each of the last three times this has occurred on OKC's schedule, it's been against the Zephyrs.
Change in K's: The RedHawks pitching staff leads the league with 43 strikeouts through four games this season (36.0 IP). Last season, the RedHawks ranked 14th out of the 16 teams in the PCL in strikeouts.
Rockin' Ronny: Through his first four career Triple-A games, RedHawks second baseman Ronny Torreyes is hitting .412 with a team-leading seven hits, including a team-high three doubles. He also has three RBI, has scored three runs, and has a team-leading 10 total bases. He has only struck out once in 17 at-bats.
Base Jumping: George Springer secured the RedHawks' first stolen base of the season in the first inning at Round Rock Sunday afternoon. Oklahoma City led all of Triple-A with 172 stolen bases in 2013, but were the lone team in the 16-squad PCL without a stolen base in 2014 entering Sunday's contest.
Power is Not Petit: After hitting a solo homer in the seventh inning yesterday, Gregorio Petit flied out to the wall in left field in his next and final at-bat. With a just a couple more feet, Petit would have had his first multi-homer game since June 22, 2010, when he previously played for the RedHawks. The game was at Zephyr Field and both home runs were grand slams. He remains the only player in team history to hit two grand slams in a game and is only one of four players in PCL history to accomplish the feat.
