FARGO, N.D. - The RedHawks returned to Newman Outdoor Field with a four and a half game lead over Winnipeg but was unable to extend their lead as two errors in the second inning put Fargo-Moorhead down for the rest of the game, losing 6-3 in front of 4,405.
Joe Mathis got the first hit of the game in the bottom half of the first inning, reaching second on a double. After advancing to third on a passed ball he scored on a groundout by Richard Austin.
Things turned bad for the RedHawks in the top of the second inning as Winnipeg plated three unearned run in part to two Fargo-Moorhead errors. Harry Berrios led off the inning reaching first base on a throwing error by Kory Wayment. After a single by Matt Mann, Aaron Mendoza laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced the runners to second and third. Ryan Hamilton loaded the bases for Winnipeg reaching base on a fielding error by Craig Ringe before Berrios and Mann scored on the next two at-bats.
Winnipeg added to its lead in the fourth inning with two runs on three hits including a league-leading 19^th stolen base by Fehlandt Lentini.
Craig Ringe hit his second home run of the season in as many games during the fifth inning to bring the RedHawks within three runs but Winnipeg scored one of its own in the seventh.
Fargo-Moorhead attempted to rally in both the eighth and ninth innings but fell short. In the eighth the team loaded the bases but grounded into a double-play to end the inning. The RedHawks added another run in the ninth inning on a double by Craig Ringe but were unable to make a complete comeback as the Goldeyes won their third game of the season against Fargo-Moorhead.
Todd George was credited with his first loss of the season in a complete game effort in which he gave up six runs, three earned, on eight hits while striking out five Goldeye batters. The loss dropped George to 4-1.
Fargo-Moorhead (23-11) will try to take Game 2 of its current three-game series with Winnipeg (19-14) on Saturday. In a lefty versus lefty match-up, Mike Peschel (2-3, 5.64) with take to the mound for the RedHawks against the Goldeyes' David Glick (0-2, 9.26). The first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and will be televised on KVLY.
