Flyers Take the Pitchers Duel; Snap Two-Game Skid

June 23, 2006 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release

The Schaumburg Flyers beat the Joliet JackHammers 2-0 at Silver Cross Field in front of 6,105 fans.

Pitching was the name of the game for the Flyers as Blake Williams had another great outing, picking up his third straight win of the year, improving to 3-0. Williams didn't give a run in seven innings pitched, he gave up six hits, while walking three, and struck seven.

Kevin Cheppenko also pitched a great game for the JackHammers, but unlike Williams, Cheppenko made one mistake. The mistake came in the top of the third inning when Ryan Walker was able to take a full count pitch over the left field wall, picking up his first homerun of the year and giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

Even though that was all the Flyers needed, they were able to add on an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Eric Cole and Josue Lopez were able to single and then Ben Van Iderstine followed with a groundball to Chad Ehrnsberger at shortstop. Ehrnsberger was unable to field the ball cleanly and that allowed Cole to score from second and Van Iderstine to make it to first safely, making the score 2-0 nothing after six.

Williams, after getting the JackHammers in order in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, finally ran into some trouble in the eighth inning. He walked Blake Gill on four straight pitches and then gave up a single to Mike Goss. Chris Andel then came in to the game, ending Williams' night. After John Lackaff sacraficed the runners into scoring position, Andel was able to strike out Ehrnsberger on a 1-2 pitch and then get Bubba Smith to tap back to the pitcher for the final out of the inning.

Dan Jackson would then come in to save the game in the bottom of the ninth, as the Flyers were able to win their second shutout game of the season. The JackHammers and Flyers will play game two of this series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Silver Cross Field.
