
RedHawks Derail RailCats 18-1

FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 18-1 in front of a near capacity crowd 4,267 fans at Newman Outdoor Field Tuesday night. RedHawks starter RHP Nick Fellman (2-3) earned his second win of the season. Fellman pitched 7.0 innings giving up one run on six hits. RailCats starter LHP Tony Cogan (2-5) suffers the loss.
RailCats LF Mike Massaro got things going with a single down the left-field line. Massaro advanced to third on a pair of drag bunts by 3B Chris Carrara and 2B Eric McNamee. RF Steve Haake hit a bleeder to RedHawks 2B Carlo Cota to move Massaro from third to home and put the RailCats on the board 1-0.
RedHawks SS Zach Penprase struck a first inning single over the mitt of RailCats SS Jeff Beachum and advanced to third on CF Nic Jackson's single up the middle. With one out and runners at the corners 3B Yurendell DeCaster drew a walk to load the bases. RedHawks 1B Randall Simon singled through the right side to plate Penprase, Jackson and DeCaster stole home on a double steal to give the RedHawks a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, RedHawks RF Jeremiah Piepkorn drew a walk and advanced to third on a throwing error by Carrara who sailed the ball over 6'3 1B Mike Rohde. Penprase legged out a bunt single to score Zimmerman from third and make it 4-1 for the home team.
In the home half of the third inning, Piepkorn scorched a single through the hot corner and advanced from first to third on a hit-and-run single by 2B Carlo Cota. With one out and men at the corners, C Alan Ricks singled to left-field to make it 5-1 RedHawks.
Penprase led off the RedHawks fourth inning with a seeing-eye-single and stole second for his league-leading 11th theft of the season. Penprase advanced to third on a throwing error by RailCats C Anthony Esquer and DeCaster pulled a two-run home run to give the RedHawks a 7-1 lead.
Jackson singled up the middle and DeCaster doubled to lead off the RedHawks sixth inning. Cogan plunked Piepkorn to load the bases and Cota hit a flare to right-field to score Jackson and DeCaster. Rick singled to dead center to plate Piepkorn and LF Mike Coles singled through the right side to score Cota and cap the RedHawks four-run sixth inning.
Rick rocketed an eighth inning double to dead center to score Simon and Cota. Coles singled through the right side and Penprase doubled down the right-field line to score Zimmerman. DeCaster hit his second two-run home run of the evening to cap the RedHawks seven-run eighth inning for the game-lasting 18-1 lead.
The RedHawks play the RailCats tomorrow night at Newman Outdoor Field. The RedHawks will send LHP Broc Coffman to the mound and LHP Onan Masaoka will counter for the RailCats.
