Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL - The Flyers managed only four hits and were shut out for the third time in the last ten games, falling 6-0 to the Joliet JackHammers Tuesday night at Alexian Field.
Joliet got a near-perfect start from Jason Novak, who less than a week ago gave up eight runs to the Flyers, walking seven over just four innings. This time, Novak succumbed just one hit, striking out six Flyers over a season-best ___ innings of work.
The JackHammers got single runs off Flyers starter Carmen Pignatiello in the fourth and fifth, with Gary Harris scoring the first run and driving in the second. Harris would finish 3-5 with two RBI and two runs to lead the JackHammers thirteen-hit outburst.
Schaumburg kept the game close into the seventh, and Pignatiello retired the first two JackHammers. But with two away, the next six JackHammers reached - four against Pignatiello, one against Garrett Rieck, and one against Kris Jiggits - and Joliet scored three times in the frame behind RBI hits from Harris, Kevin Rios, and Freddie Thon to balloon the lead to 5-0. Phil Avlas would add to the beating in the top of the ninth with a solo home run.
Reliever Kris Jiggits was the lone bright spot for the Flyers. Jiggits went the final 2.1 of the game, recording all seven outs on strike outs. The seven strike outs is the most for a Flyers reliever this season, and it falls one short of the most by any Flyers starter this season.
Pignatiello falls to 3-2 with the loss, while Novak improves to 1-1 in his second start of the year. Tomorrow, Schaumburg sends LHP Alain Quijano (1-0, 4.85) to the mound against Rory Shortell (2-1, 4.01) for a 12:05 start.
Tickets are still available for tomorrow's game. Come out to the park to celebrate Bearon's Birthday with mascots from around Chicagoland.
