
JackHammers Earn Win in Schaumburg

SCHAUMBURG, IL-Three JackHammers hurlers (Jason Novak, Devin Anderson and David Byard) combined for a four-hit shutout as the Joliet JackHammers (14-22) beat the Schaumburg Flyers (18-15) 6-0 in the opener of a three-game series before 3,375 fans at ALEXIAN Field on Tuesday night. Offensively, 2B Garry Harris (3-5) and 1B Freddie Thon (2-5) combined for two RBI apiece for Joliet.
The JackHammers scored a single run in the 4th inning against Schaumburg LHP Carmen Pigantiello (3-2). Harris led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a single by SS Kevin Rios (2-5). Harris stole third base to put runners at the corners of the diamond for C Phil Avlas (2-4).
Avlas popped out to the catcher for the second out of the inning. Thon hit into a fielder's choice. Rios reached second base on an error by Flyers SS Travis Brown, who dropped the ball. Harris scored from third base, netting Thon an RBI in a 1-0 Joliet lead.
Joliet increased its lead to 2-0 in the 5th inning. 3B Andrew Pinckney (0-4) worked a walk and moved to second base on a walk issued to RF Wally Backman, Jr. (1-4) LF Jamie McGraw (0-3) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners into scoring position. CF Adam Klein (2-4)hit into a fielder's choice that retired Pinckney at home plate.
Harris hit a single to score Backman, Jr. for a 2-0 Joliet advantage.
The JackHammers 7th inning provided all the insurance runs Joliet needed. With two outs in the inning, Joliet started hitting. Klein smacked a double and scored on a triple by Harris. Rios singled in Harris for a 4-0 Joliet lead.
After Avlas worked a walk, Rios stole second base and moved to third base on a throwing error by Flyers C Richard Mercado.
Thon hit an RBI single to score Rios for a 5-0 Joliet lead.
Avlas smacked a solo home run over the center field wall in the 9th inning to advance the lead to 6-0.
Novak (1-0) worked five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit for the JackHammers. Anderson pitched two innings and yielded just one hit. Byard polished off the final two innings with just two hits allowed.
