RedHawks Bats' Come Alive to Down Goldeyes 9-4

July 6, 2018 - American Association (AA) - Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

FARGO, N.D. - Trailing by three runs before they even had a chance to bat, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (22-22) rallied to score two runs in each of the first three innings on their way to a 9-4 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (21-25) tonight at Newman Outdoor Field. Leo Pina went four-for-five with five RBIs and a run scored in the first meeting this season between the two northernmost teams in the American Association.

Trey McNutt rebounded quickly after giving up a three-run home run to Josh Romanski, and an RBI double to Josh Mazzola three batters later. McNutt did not allow another run over the next five innings on his way to his second win of the season. The Haleyville, AL native is now 2-4 with a 4.83 ERA in nine starts.

Pina's two-RBI single in the first inning narrowed the Winnipeg lead to two runs, and the RedHawks tied the game at four runs apiece in the second on a sacrifice fly by Maikol Gonzalez and a Brennan Metzger RBI double.

Back-to-back RBI singles by Chris Jacobs and Yhoxian Medina in the third gave the Hawks a 6-4 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Pina went four-for-five with a three-run triple in the sixth inning to extend the Fargo-Moorhead lead to five runs. Pina capped his night with a single in the eighth inning.

Travis Ballew stepped into the game in the seventh inning and the reliever gave up only one hit over three innings to secure not only the RedHawks win, but also his first save of the season. Ballew has a 2.54 ERA in 24 appearances for Fargo-Moorhead this season.

Five of the RedHawks' nine batters finished the game with multiple hits as Fargo-Moorhead moved back to .500 and earned one half game back on the North Division-leading St. Paul Saints (24-21). F-M is now 1.5 games behind the Saints and a game behind second place Gary SouthShore (23-21). Both the Saints and RailCats were inactive tonight.

Fargo-Moorhead will look to start a winning streak tomorrow night in the second-of-four games against the Goldeyes at Newman Outdoor Field. First pitch will be at 7:02 PM with fireworks following the game.
