Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Sioux Falls, S.D. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats dropped their season-high-tying third straight contest after getting shutout by the Sioux Falls Canaries, 1-0, in the first game of the year between the two teams on Friday night at Sioux Falls Stadium. The RailCats never had a baserunner reach third base on the evening and have now been shutout five times. Friday's game was also just 2 hours and eight minutes, the shortest 9-inning game all season.
Left-handed starters Cesilio Pimentel and Jeff McKenzie gave all 4,012 in attendance a show with one heck of a pitcher's duel. Pimentel (3-1) took a no-hitter in to the seventh, retired 16 in a row at one point, and yielded just four hits, a walk and struck out seven over eight scoreless innings in his third win of the year. Pimentel also lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.36 with Friday's performance.
McKenzie (2-5) was charged with his season-high fifth straight loss despite allowing just one run for the second consecutive time. The second year RailCat allowed just five hits, a walk and struck out two in 5.2 innings. The El Dorado Hills, Calif., native retired the first six he faced, 10 of the first 11 batters and didn't allow a single extra-base hit for the first time all year.
Sioux Falls (18-26) scored the only run of the night on Jordan Dean's two-out RBI single in the fifth. Maxx Garrett drew a four-pitch walk to leadoff the frame before former RailCat Mitch Glasser moved Garrett up to second with a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Dean poked an RBI single to left, bringing home Garrett for the only run of the night.
Andy De Jesus broke up Pimentel's no-hitter with a leadoff single to center in the top of the seventh. Gary (23-22) brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the ninth, however, Sioux Falls closer Kyle Schepel (3) got Colin Willis to bounce in to a 5-4-3 game-ending double play for the save.
Myles Smith faced the minimum in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief for Gary. The right-hander allowed just one hit and struck out two.
The RailCats and Canaries continue their three-game series on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. RHP Gabe Perez (1-0, 4.19) makes his second start for Gary and opposes Sioux Falls RHP Dylan Thompson (4-3, 3.81) in the middle game of the series.
