August 11, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Memphis Redbirds took their third straight game in the series over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox as they took the nightcap of a doubleheader by the score of 3-1 in front of 8,322 fans on Tuesday evening. The game was shortened to seven innings.

Colorado Springs scored a run in the first inning to take a quick lead as Eric Young Jr. singled to lead things off, move to second on his 55th stolen base, and scored on a triple by Matt Miller. The fast start would not continue however as Memphis shutout down the Sox' prolific offense from there on out.

Allen Craig tied the game up in the fourth inning with a solo homer off of starter Kurt Birkins to register his third homer of the day after hitting two in the first game. Reliever Matt Herges (2-2) came on in the sixth to replace Birkins and gave up two runs on three hits to give Memphis the lead for good and take the loss. In the inning, Jarrett Hoffpauir tripled in a run and Nick Stavinoha singled in the other.

Matt Scherer (3-2) picked up the win in relief after tossing one shutout inning. Onelis Perez started for the Redbirds and looked good as he tossed four innings and gave up just one run on three hits while striking out seven. Birkins was solid for the Sox as well as he worked five innings and surrendered just one run on three hits while punching out a season-high eight. Pete Parise notched his fourth save of the season with a scoreless seventh.

The final game of the series is set for tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. The Sox look to avoid the sweep by sending out RH Adam Eaton (3-3, 2.67) to face LH Evan MacLane (4-8, 3.67).

GAME NOTES: Young Jr.'s run scored in the first inning was his 107th of the season and broke the all-time single-season record previous held by Phil Hiatt (106 runs, 2000).
