Memphis Doubles Up Colorado Springs, 4-2

The Memphis Redbirds defeated the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 4-2 in game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday evening at Security Service Field. The game was the completion of the suspended game from Monday night that was stopped because of rain and hail in the bottom of the first inning. 2,035 fans took in the game on Monday night.

Both teams put up a single run in the second inning to get the scoring started. Memphis plated a run on an RBI single by catcher Brandon Yarbrough and the Sky Sox scored on a run scoring triple by catcher Edwin Bellorin. In the fourth, Redbirds leftfielder Allen Craig hit the first of his two home runs on the night, a two-run shot to left to give Memphis a 3-1 lead that they would hold the rest of the way.

Colorado Springs cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth after Chris Frey led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI single by Eric Young Jr but would get no closer. Craig's second homer, a solo shot in the ninth off reliever Mike Timlin, gave Memphis an insurance run late.

Memphis starter P.J. Walters (7-7) picked up the win after working 7.2 innings over two days, he started the game on Monday and returned to continue the game on Tuesday, and giving up two runs on ten hits. Esmil Rogers (1-3) relieved Monday starter Damian Moss and took the loss after surrendering three runs on just four hits over six innings of work. Redbirds closer Royce Ring notched his fourth save and second of the series by working a perfect ninth.

GAME NOTES: Frey left the game after the end of the seventh inning after hurting his ankle sliding into second. Following the game, Frey was placed on the disabled list and infielder Mark Bellhorn was activated from the disabled list to take his spot.
