Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals completed a three-game sweep of the Midland RockHounds on Tuesday night, thanks to an 8-3 win at Hammons Field.

Brandon Dickson fell two outs shy of a complete game, but pitched very well over 8 1/3 innings, earning the win.

Dickson got all the run support he'd need in the second inning, as the Cards grabbed a 6-0 advantage.

Jim Rapoport's two-run double put the Cards in front to stay at 2-0. Colt Sedbrook followed with another double down the right-field line, making it 3-0. Midland starter Daniel Haigwood (1-1) should have been out of the inning after that, as he got Shane Peterson to pop up to shallow center field. The ball was mishandled by shortstop Michael Affronti though, as Sedbrook scored to make it 4-0. Steven Hill capitalized on the two-out mistake, homering to right field behind Peterson, giving the Cards a 6-0 advantage after two innings.

Another Affronti error allowed Mike Folli to score in the sixth, giving Springfield a 7-0 lead.

Dickson carried a shutout into the eighth inning, before Josh Horton's RBI single brought home Matt Sulentic, making it 7-1.

Springfield got that run back in the bottom of the inning, as Jim Rapoport walked and then eventually scored on a wild pitch by reliever Steve Sharpe, making it 8-1.

Attempting to become the first Springfield pitcher to work a nine-inning complete game win since Rich Rundles in 2006, Dickson fell two outs shy. After getting the first out, Dickson gave up a single to Adrian Cardenas, then an RBI double to Josh Donaldson, bringing Midland to within six at 8-2.

Marco Gonzalez came out of the Springfield bullpen and surrendered back-to-back hits, as Midland made it 8-3. But with runners at first and third and one out, Gonzalez got Sulentic to ground into the game-ending double-play, sealing Springfield's third sweep of the year.

Dickson (6-5) earned the win, allowing three runs on ten hits over 8 1/3 innings, while striking out seven batters.

The Cards (7-5 Second Half, 45-37 Overall) take Wednesday off, then open a six-game road trip with three in Frisco, beginning on Thursday night. Ryan Kulik (3-5) looks for his third straight win on Thursday evening, taking on Frisco's Blake Beavan (0-2) at 7:00pm.

The Redbirds return to Hammons Field on Thursday, July 16th, opening a four-game series against the Double-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com. We hope to see you at Hammons Field...Escape to Cardinals Baseball!
