Redbirds' rally falls short

MEMPHIS, TN - Nashville held off a late Memphis rally to slip by the ‘Birds 7-6 Monday night at AutoZone Park.

The Redbirds closed within a run in the bottom of the ninth inning before former Redbird Matt Ginter closed the game out for the Sounds. Troy Glaus' second single of the night knocked in Tyler Greene to cut the Sounds lead to one run but the rally fell short with Brian Barden grounding into a fielder's choice to end the game. Barden tied the game in the first inning with a three-run homer after Tyler Greene led off with a solo blast.

Nashville jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first inning capped by Adam Heether's two-run homer to left field. Alcides Escobar delivered the lead in the fourth with an RBI-single and two sacrifice flies in the seventh inning padded the lead. Hernan Iribarren led the Sounds with three hits.

Memphis starter Clayton Mortensen took the loss allowing seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits over six innings. Nashville starter Chase Wright earned the win giving up four runs on seven hits in six innings of work.

The ‘Birds and Sounds play tomorrow night with game time slated for 7:05 p.m. Memphis sends Blake Hawksworth to the hill tomorrow night to face Nashville right-hander Tim Dillard.
