Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday recalled forward Mitch Callahan from the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Skating in 53 Griffins games this season, the 25-year-old Callahan ranks among the team's leaders with 36 points (5th), 14 goals (T5th), six power play goals (T3rd), 22 assists (5th) and 32 penalty minutes (6th). Callahan had his season-high five-game point streak snapped in Grand Rapids' loss at Cleveland last night.
Detroit's sixth choice, 180th overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the 6-foot, 195-pound winger has logged one game with the Red Wings, becoming the 144th Griffins alumnus to play in the NHL when he debuted on March 25, 2014 at Columbus.
In his sixth season as a professional, Callahan ranks among the Griffins' all-time leaders with 352 games played (4th), 179 points (T7th), 92 goals (3rd) and 397 PIM (9th). A 2013 Calder Cup champion with Grand Rapids, Callahan has played in 41 postseason contests with the Griffins - tied for seventh most in team history - and contributed 18 points (7-11 - 18) and 48 PIM.
A native of Whittier, Calif., Callahan played three seasons with Kelowna from 2008-11 and posted 128 points (57-71 - 128) in 204 games. He added 19 points (8-11 - 19) in 44 postseason contests and helped the Rockets win the Western Hockey League championship during his first year with the club. Callahan also won bronze medal while representing Team USA at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship, appearing in six games and scoring one goal during the tournament.
The Red Wings and Griffins are both in action Friday night as Detroit travels to Calgary at 9 p.m. ET and Grand Rapids takes on the Rampage in San Antonio at 8:30 p.m. ET.
