Red Wings Recall Marchenko

DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings today recalled defenseman Alexey Marchenko from the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins and placed center Brad Richards on seven-day injured reserve.

Originally a seventh-round draft pick (205th overall) of the Red Wings in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Marchenko has skated in four games for the Griffins this season, recording two penalty minutes and three shots on goal. The 23-year old blueliner has logged 104 AHL games since 2013-14, registering 38 points (6-32-38), 42 penalty minutes and a plus-31 rating and was one of the team's representatives for the 2014 AHL All-Star Classic. Currently in his third season of professional hockey in North America and seventh pro season overall, Marchenko has appeared in 14 regular-season and three postseason games for the Red Wings over the past two seasons (2013-15), notching two points (1-1-2) and four penalty minutes.

Originally from Moscow, Russia, Marchenko spent several seasons with CSKA Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) prior to arriving in North America. From 2009-13, he appeared in 82 KHL games for the club and registered 11 points (4-7-11). He also tallied 78 points (18-60-78) in 84 games for the team at the junior level, winning a league championship in 2011 and leading all defensemen in scoring.
