Devils Snap Pirates Three-Game Winning Streak

Albany, NY - Rookie defenseman Mike Matheson scored the first goal of his pro career on Saturday night at the Times Union Center, but it was not enough as the Albany Devils (2-2-1-0) snapped the Portland Pirates (3-2-0-0) three-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory to split this weekend's home-and-home series.

After a scoreless first period, the Devils got on the board first at 9:10 of the second period as Reid Boucher snapped a wrist shot from right circle low to the glove side on Pirates goalie Sam Brittain. Mike Sislo got the lone assist on the play.

The Devils furthered their lead at 17:36 when Blake Pietila tipped in a Seth Helgeson slap shot. Marc-Andre Gragnani got the other assist on the goal which put Albany up 2-0.

Albany took a three goal lead early in the third as Jim O'Brien found the back of the net at 4:38 with assists from Corey Tropp and Reece Scarlett.

The Pirates fired back with their only goal of the night late in regulation when Mike Matheson slapped home his first professional goal at 17:44 with assistance from Rocco Grimaldi.

Brittain (1-1-0) made 29 saves, taking his first defeat of the season for Portland. Yann Danis (2-1-1) made 19 saves to notch his second straight win in goal for the Devils.

Portland was 0-for-4 on the power play, while Albany was 1-for-6.

The Pirates will head to Providence this Friday, October 30, to face the Bruins at 7:05 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
