
Red Sox Recall Catcher Ryan Lavarnway

The Boston Red Sox today recalled catcher Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Alfredo Aceves was optioned to Pawtucket following yesterday's win over Oakland.
Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.
Lavarnway, 25, has appeared in 11 games for the PawSox in 2013, all at catcher, and has hit .310 (13-for-42) with three doubles, one home run, seven RBI, nine runs, and seven walks. He has thrown out four of eight attempted base stealers (50 percent), tied for the second-best rate among International League qualifiers. Selected by the Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2008 June Draft, Lavarnway has played in 63 career major league games with Boston over the 2011-12 seasons, going 33-for-192 (.172) with 10 doubles, four home runs, and 20 RBI. He will be active for tonight's game against Houston at Fenway Park.
The 31-year-old Aceves has gone 1-1 with an 8.66 ERA (17 ER/17.2 IP) in five appearances with Boston this season, including three starts. In 188 career major league games (12 starts) with the Yankees (2008-10) and Red Sox (2011-13), he owns a 27-14 record with 29 saves and a 3.82 ERA (145 ER/341.2 IP).
