Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, Ky - A chilly night in downtown Louisville wasn't enough to keep the Braves' bats from heating up as Gwinnett (10-11) scored 7 on 11 hits in the first four innings, then held on to defeat Louisville (10-10) 7-3. Daniel Corcino (L, 0-4) relieved starter Sean Marshall who was on an injury rehab appearance. Corcino gave up four runs in the third and three runs in the fourth en route to his fourth loss in a row.

Corcino worked a clean second inning before things became unraveled in the third. With one on and two out, Corcino gave up back-to-back singles to Ernesto Mejia and Joey Terdoslavich. After a walk to Joe Leonard, Braves' catcher Matt Pagnozzi hit a bases clearing triple to bring Gwinnett's lead to 4-0.

Corcino remained in the game for the fourth inning and it didn't take long for Mike MacDougal to relieve him. After a triple and a double, Todd Cunningham hit his first career Triple-A homerun, a two-run shot, to end Corcino's night. He finished the night pitching 2.1 innings giving up eight hits and seven runs, striking out two.

The Bats bullpen was strong in the relief effort. Five pitchers combined to give up one hit in 5.2 innings, striking out two and walking one. Gwinnett starter Omar Poveda (W, 2-0) pitched a strong 7.2 innings, giving up one run and allowing four hits while striking out four. Louisville sent three batters to the plate five times in the game.

Denis Phipps led off the fifth with a double to the right-center gap, advanced to third on Josh Fellhauer's ground out and scored when Nevin Ashley grounded out to first base. The Bats warmed up in the eighth and ninth but it was a case of too little, too late. Josh Fellhauer and Emmanuel Burriss both singled in the eighth but were left stranded.

Louisville loaded the bases to start the ninth with singles by Felix Perez and Neftali Soto and a walk to Henry Rodriguez. After a couple of groundball out RBI's from Fellhauer and Ashley the Braves brought in closer Cory Rasmus. Rasmus (S, 3) hit Mike Hessman to once again load the bases and Emmanuel Burriss, last night's walk off hero, stepped to the plate. It took Rasmus nine pitches but he got Burriss to fly out to shallow left field, ending the game.

The Bats did not steal a base, ending their seven game streak of at least one stolen base. IL stolen base leader Billy Hamilton did not start the game, but was on-deck following Burriss in the ninth inning to bat in the pitcher's spot. Ashley finished the game 1-for-4 with 2 RBI's. Burriss, who collected his first hit of the season last night, went 2-for-4.
