Clippers Hold off Late RailRiders Rally for 4-1 Win

Moosic, Pa. - The Columbus Clippers (Triple-A, Cleveland Indians) held off a late Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (New York Yankees) rally as they defeated the RailRiders on Thursday evening, 4-1. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre The loss came despite a strong effort from Chien-Ming Wang, who made his second start in a RailRider uniform.

Wang (1-1) worked six and two-thirds innings, and allowed just two unearned runs. He conceded just four hits, two walks, and struck out two batters.

After a perfect first two innings, the Clippers scored two runs against Wang in the third. Mike McDade led off the inning with a double to center field. Two outs later, Tim Fedroff hit a ground ball to shortstop Gil Velazquez, and reached when Velazquez mishandled the ball. McDade moved to third on the play, and then scored when Matt Lawson followed with a single to center. Jeremy Hermida then walked to load the bases. Fedroff then scored from third when Wang threw a wild pitch.

Columbus starter Carlos Carrasco exited the game in scary fashion in the fifth. Carrasco was hit by a comebacker off the bat of Corban Joseph. Giovanni Soto finished the inning for the Clippers.

Juan Cedeno was brought on to pitch for the RailRiders in relief of Wang after he conceded a single to Juan Diaz and a double by Ryan Rohlinger to put runners at second and third. Cedeno got Fedroff to ground to short, but he legged out the infield single, which allowed Diaz to score and extend the Columbus lead to 3-0.

The Clippers added another run in the eighth. Yan Gomes led off with a walk, and advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball. After Cord Phelps walked, Matt Carson hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Gomes.

The RailRiders made the game interesting in the ninth. Austin Romine led off with a home run to left field, his first of the season. The RailRiders had runners at first and second with two outs, but Joseph lined sharply to the right fielder Hermida to end the game.

David Huff (2-2) entered the game in the sixth inning and was awarded the win. He went two and two-thirds innings, and allowed just one hit with four strikeouts. Preston Guilmet was called upon to record the final out in the ninth for his International League leading seventh save of the season.

The loss drops SWB below the .500 mark at 9-10, while Columbus improves to 11-10. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Columbus will play the final game of their four-game series Friday evening at PNC Field. Friday Fireworks presented by Jack Williams Tire & Auto will follow the baseball action. Bring your bellbottoms as it will be 70's night at PNC Field. Brett Marshall (0-2, 9.69) will get the start for the RailRiders.
