Frederick Keys News Release

SALEM, VA - The Salem Red Sox scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to post a 5-3 come-from-behind win over the Frederick Keys on Friday night at Haley Toyota Field. It marked just the Keys second setback in their last 13 games.

Entering the bottom of the eighth trailing by one, the Red Sox (33-37, 1-1) sent seven men to bat to take the lead for good. Brett Netzer opened the inning with a triple off Tyler Erwin, before a walk put men at the corners. The Keys southpaw induced a ground ball to nab Netzer at the plate, but a Bobby Dalbec RBI double to right tied the game up.

After Jerry Downs was hit by a pitch, Erwin (1-3) was taken out in favor of Zach Muckenhirn. He threw a wild pitch enabling Trenton Kemp to score from third before a sac-fly from Tyler Hill made it a two-run Salem lead.

Frederick (36-35, 1-1) went ahead in the seventh on an RBI double by Randolph Gassaway which plated Daniel Fajardo. The Keys almost got a second run, but Wilson Garcia was called out at the plate on a close play. In the top of the eighth, the visitors loaded the bases thanks to three walks and a hit-by-pitch, but did not score after Jomar Reyes was caught trying to steal third prematurely.

In the third, Salem got on the scoreboard first courtesy of a Netzer single off Cristian Alvarado which plated Santiago Espinal from second. The Keys countered with the next two, utilizing a sac-fly by Reyes in the fourth and a double play ball with the bases loaded to make it 2-1. Salem tied the game in the fifth on a pickoff error by Alvarado which scored Ryan Scott from third.

Erwin suffered the loss, allowing three runs on two hits in 0.1 of an inning. Jake Cosart (3-0) earned the win for Salem, pitching 1.1 scoreless frames to go with a walk and two strikeouts. Alvarado tied his season-high of seven innings pitched, giving up two runs in a no-decision.

The Keys and Red Sox play the third of four games on Saturday night. Right-hander Michael Baumann (4-0, 2.34) starts for the Frederick and will be opposed by Salem right-hander Daniel Gonzalez (7-1, 3.29). First pitch is at 6:05 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn App.
