Governor Northam to Throw First Pitch at Lynchburg Hillcats Game Saturday

Lynchburg, Va. - Governor Ralph Northam with throw out Saturday's first pitch at the Lynchburg Hillcats game versus the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on June 23. The Governor's appearance at Saturday's Hillcats game is part of the "Summer of Baseball," a series of visits to each of the Commonwealth's nine minor league team stadiums to tout the importance of baseball in Virginia communities. In addition to throwing out the first pitch, Governor Northam will present an official proclamation to the players and leadership of the Lynchburg-based baseball team, proclaiming June 23, 2018 as Lynchburg Hillcats Day in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

"Baseball is known as America's national pastime, and that certainly rings true for the people of Virginia, as well," said Governor Northam. "Our nine minor league baseball teams are important contributors to communities across the Commonwealth, uniting friends and family and bringing Virginians of all ages together to enjoy a night out at the ballpark. [Saturday's] game in Lynchburg is the perfect opportunity to celebrate baseball in Virginia. I encourage all Virginians to attend baseball games in their own communities and across the Commonwealth, and discover for yourselves why Virginia is for Baseball Lovers."

Northam took office as the 73rd State Governor of Virginia in January of 2018. Before taking office as Governor, he was the 40th Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 2014 to 2018.

Governor Northam is a native of Nassawadox, Va., and will be welcomed by the Hillcats on a night that already includes a post-game Sparkling Saturday fireworks show. He will also join the Hillcats Radio Network in the top of the second inning.

First pitch against the Pelicans will be at 6 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to catch Gov. Northam throw out the first pitch prior to the official start of the game.

The Hillcats and Pelicans continue their four-game series on Friday night at City Stadium. Friday is Jurassic at the Park Night, and the first 1,000 fans will receive a Francisco Mejia bobblehead.

The Lynchburg Hillcats are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The Hillcats are eight-time Carolina League Champions, having most recently won the Mills Cup Championship in 2017.
