Gwinnett Stripers News Release
PAWTUCKET, RI - In a game featuring 19 runs and 27 hits, the Pawtucket Red Sox (18-19) outslugged the Gwinnett Braves (18-20) by a 12-7 score Sunday afternoon in the finale of the three-game series at McCoy Stadium.
The Red Sox jumped on Gwinnett starter Lucas Sims early as Sam Travis cracked a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to open up a 3-0 lead. The advantage went to 4-0 in the second as Justin Maxwell delivered an infield single with the bases loaded.
But in the top of the third, Gwinnett came storming back. With two on and nobody out, Emilio Bonifacio drilled an RBI single to left off Pawtucket starter Henry Owens to cut the lead to 4-1. Adonis Garcia followed with a three-run home run to right field, tying the game at four. It was the fourth home run in as many games for Garcia, who has at least one hit in all nine games he's played in for Gwinnett.
In the top of the fifth, Brandon Snyder hit a two-out, solo homer to right to give Gwinnett a 5-4 lead.
But the bottom of the fourth was the decisive inning for the Red Sox. With two on and one out, David Peterson came in to replace Sims and promptly allowed a two-RBI double to Maxwell to put Pawtucket back in front, 6-5. Later in the inning, Bryce Brentz singled in two runs against Peterson to make it 8-4, and Deven Marrero plated a run on a sacrifice fly for a 9-5 lead to cap the frame.
Matt Tuiasosopo popped his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot, to bring the G-Braves within 9-7 in the fifth, but Peterson gave up three more runs in the bottom of the frame, including a two-run homer by Travis, to put the Red Sox up 12-7 and cap the scoring.
Sims (L, 0-3) was charged with six runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings, while walking three and striking out four in his shortest start of the season. Peterson allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits and two walks in just 1.0 inning of relief, before Matt Marksberry (2.0 innings), Jose Ramirez (1.0 inning) and Sean Burnett (1.0 inning) finished up, allowing just three hits the rest of the way.
Owens (W, 3-1) allowed seven runs on eight hits over 5.0 innings for the Red Sox, while walking two and striking out five. Roman Mendez, Robby Scott and Pat Light worked the final 4.0 innings for Pawtucket, keeping the G-Braves off the scoreboard.
At the plate, the G-Braves were led by Garcia, who was 1-for-4 with the home run and three RBIs. Bonifacio went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Tuiasosopo went 2-for-5 with a homer, a double and two RBIs. Anthony Recker collected two hits in five at-bats and Snyder cracked his first home run of the season in a 2-for-4 day.
Travis was 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs, three runs scored and five RBI for Pawtucket, while Marco Hernandez went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Maxwell also went 3-for-4, collecting a double and three RBIs.
The G-Braves return to Coolray Field Monday night to begin a five-game homestand. Monday will be game one of a three-game series against the Durham Bulls, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Casey Kelly (1-1, 2.93) will start for Gwinnett against righty Jaime Schultz (3-1, 2.54) for Durham. Tony Schiavone has the call of the action beginning at 6:35 p.m. on 97.7 FM.
