Mud Hens Shut out in Series Finale Loss
May 15, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Toledo dropped their third straight game to Lehigh Valley on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Field by a score of 5-0. Toledo falls to 16-19 on the season. The Mud Hens offense has struggled throughout this series with the IronPigs, scattering only two runs on fourteen hits during the three games.
LHP Matt Boyd (7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO) got the call from Manager Lloyd McClendon today for the home team. The IronPigs got to Boyd early with a two-run homer to right field in the top of the first inning off the bat of C Andrew Knapp. These runs came with two outs in the inning, after Boyd had retired the first two batters with ease. This ended the lefty's scoreless streak at 15 innings.
Boyd appeared to settle in following a rough first inning, as he did not allow another base runner until a two out base hit in the fourth. He eclipsed the 100-pitch mark in the seventh inning, ending his day with only five hits allowed and two earned runs.
Once again, the Hens offense got out to a sluggish start, not recording their first hit of the game until LF Wynton Bernard doubled in the third inning. Following that, the second hit of the game came in the form of a single from 3B Casey McGehee in the home half of the seventh. The Mud Hens threatened in the seventh inning with two men on and one out. However, 1B Chad Huffman flew out to right and 2B Argenis Diaz lined out to center, ending the inning.
Bobby Parnell tossed the eighth inning for Toledo, allowing a run via a long double off the wall in left field from LF Nick Williams. After Parnell loaded the bases in the inning on a hit and two walks, he allowed a single up the middle that scored one, increasing the Lehigh Valley lead to 4-0.
Blaine Hardy took over on the mound with bases loaded and hit DH Will Venable, allowing the fifth run of the game for Lehigh Valley to score. A double play ball ended the inning, but not before three runs scored. Bruce Rondon took over for the ninth.
The Mud Hens take a road trip beginning tomorrow in Buffalo for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch. Toledo returns home on Tuesday, May 24 against Durham.
