FREDERICK, MD - The Salem Red Sox (15-10) used three home runs on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Frederick Keys (8-17) on Tuesday night at Nymeo Field. As a team, the orange and black finished 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position, and tied a season-high by leaving 11 men on base.
The Red Sox started the scoring in the first. Following a leadoff walk to Santiago Espinal, Brett Netzer doubled in a run. Roldani Baldwin followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Frederick answered in the bottom of the first with a run. Randolph Gassaway drew a two-out walk and scored on a Jomar Reyes single.
Salem would add a run in the top of the second on a Kyrie Washington home run off of Keys starter Alex Wells. In the bottom of the fourth Frederick added a single marker. Yojhan Quevedo was hit by a pitch. He advanced to third on a Collin Woody double, and the Keys loaded the bases with a Ryan McKenna walk. Quevedo would score on a Cole Billingsley ground out to make it 3-2 Red Sox.
The Red Sox scored a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings on solo home runs. Espinal launched a home run in the fifth before Baldwin led off the sixth with a homer, which capped off the scoring for both teams.
Wells (0-3) took the loss. The left-hander tossed six innings and allowed five runs on six hits. He walked a man and struck out six, while also tying a career-high with three home runs allowed. Daniel Gonzalez (4-0) picked up his fourth straight win. The reliever fired three scoreless innings, allowing three hits while walking one and striking out four. Matthew Gorst picked up his third save by striking out five through two scoreless innings.
