ICYMI: Weston Wilson homered for the second straight game, Trey Supak struck out eight and took a no-hitter into the fifth, but Anderson Tejeda, Chuck LeBlanc and Alex Kowalczyk each hit home runs while leading the Wood Ducks to a sweep clinching 6-3 victory versus the Mudcats on Sunday afternoon in Kinston.
ABOUT THE LAST ONE: The Mudcats were swept in a series for the first time this season after the Wood Ducks took the finale of a three game series 6-3 on Sunday in Kinston. The sweep also ran Carolina's current losing streak to a season high four straight games.
VS. MYRTLE BEACH: Carolina went 13-8 versus Myrtle Beach last season, with nearly half of those wins coming over the final seven games between the two teams. The Mudcats went 6-1 to close out the 2017 season against Myrtle Beach, including a four game sweep at home last September.
MUDCATS STARTER: Left-hander Nathan Kirby has tonight's series opening start against the Pelicans in Myrtle Beach. Kirby is currently 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA over four starts this season and has totaled eight strikeouts against six walks over 9.2 innings pitched. He last pitched on April 25 versus the Pelicans and worked through 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings. He also reached a season high 44 pitches (28 strikes) while also striking out one and walking one.
OPP STARTER: Righty Keegan Thompson heads to the mound for the Pelicans in tonight's opener against the Mudcats. Thompson is 0-2 with a 4.19 ERA over four starts so far this season. He has also struck out 14 while walking only four over 19.1 innings pitched. He last pitched on April 25 in Carolina and held the Mudcats to just two hits over 5.0 scoreless innings (3 BB, 3 SO).
STRUGGLING LATE: Mudcats pitchers have combined to pitch to a 7.63 ERA (17 R, 13 ER) in the ninth inning so far this season. They have also pitched to a 5.68 ERA in the eighth and a 5.25 ERA in the seventh. Chase Williams leads the CL in most games (10) and games finished (9)... Ryan Aguilar is tied for 3rd in the CL in OBP (.424)... Luis Aviles Jr. is 3rd in the CL in stolen bases (11)... Tucker Neuhaus is 3rd in the CL in most strikeouts (33)... Max McDowell leads CL catchers in most caught steals (15) and caught stealing efficiency (.500).
GOT HEEEM: Max McDowell leads MiLB catchers in most caught steals (15) and is tied for 4th in MiLB in caught stealing/stolen base efficiency (.500) for catchers with at least 15 attempts against... McDowell caught four base runners attempting to steal and picked off another at first on Opening Night, April 5 vs. Winston-Salem.
WALK THIS WAY: The Mudcats pitching staff has combined to walk a Carolina League and Minor League Baseball high 121 batters so far this season. Carolina is also second in MiLB in BB/9 (5.36) having walked 121 over 24 games and 203.1 innings this season. Only the Great Lakes Loons (Low-A, Midwest League) have a higher BB/9 (5.54) than the Mudcats so far this season.
