Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - Max Povse pitched through the sixth, but allowed three runs and six hits while suffering his first loss of the season as the Red Sox finished a three game sweep of the Mudcats with a 5-1 win at Five County Stadium on Tuesday.
Povse (1-1, 1.42) worked through the first three innings without allowing a run and had stretched his scoreless innings streak to begin the season to 16 and 1/3 innings pitched. Guzman broke that streak with his two-run double to center in the fourth and was 1-for-3 in the game for the Red Sox (10-4).
Guzman's double was followed by a two-out RBI single from Rafael Devers in the fifth and a two run Salem eighth. The Red Sox collected six hits and scored three times against Povse on Tuesday while wrapping up their three game sweep of the Mudcats. The victory was also their seventh straight overall and seventh straight on the road to start the new season.
Newly added reliever Michael O'Neal pitched the seventh and eighth for the Mudcats (6-8) and managed to work through a three up, three down seventh before giving up both Salem runs in the eighth. O'Neal allowed a solo home run to Mike Meyers in the eighth and finished his Braves system debut with two runs and two hits allowed over two innings pitched.
Carolina's only run of the game came in the seventh when Keith Curcio forced in Stephen Gaylor from third on a hard grounder to fist. Salem's Nick Longhi misplayed Curcio's potential groundout and errantly allowed it to roll into right.
Gaylor had two hits and was 2-for-4 with Carolina's only run against starter Jalen Beeks and relievers Jamie Callahan and Jake Drehoff. Beeks (2-0, 0.57) earned the win after blanking the Mudcats over five full innings. He walked one and struck out three while earning his second straight win. Callahan pitched the sixth, seventh and eighth innings and allowed an unearned run and two hits. Drehoff worked the ninth and struck out two in a non-save situation.
Curcio was 1-for-4 in the loss and is batting .357 this season. Omar Obregon was 1-for-3 with a single and stretched his current hitting streak to a career best 11 consecutive games. Dansby Swanson was 0-for-4 and saw his second five game hitting streak of the season come to an end.
The Mudcats were swept in the three game series by Salem and finished 2-5 in their first homestead of the season. The Red Sox have now won seven straight games and are 7-2 since splitting their first sesaon of the season with the Mudcats. Carolina next plays the Pelicans in Myrtle Beach in game one of a four game road trip beginning on Thursday night at TicketReturn.com Field in Myrtle Beach.
