Salem Red Sox News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - The Salem Red Sox won their seventh-straight game and finished off a perfect road trip, 5-1 over the Carolina Mudcats Wednesday afternoon at Five County Stadium.
Max Povse of the Mudcats (6-8) kept the Red Sox offense at bay through the first three innings, but Salem struck in the fourth inning, striking first on a two-run double by Franklin Guzman.
The Red Sox (10-4) were able to bloat the score to 3-0 in the fifth, when Deiner Lopez was chased home on a Rafael Devers single. Povse (1-1) had his roughest start of the season, allowing the three runs in 6.0 innings, walking two and striking out two.
On the mound for Salem, Jalen Beeks (2-0) was able to navigate his way through some trouble, but made it through 5.0 shutout innings, allowing five hits, striking out three and walking one. Beeks lowered his season ERA to only 0.57.
Jamie Callahan was first out of the bullpen and threw a scoreless sixth, but yielded an unearned run in the seventh to cut the score to 3-1. Callahan rebounded to pitch a 1-2-3 eighth, in his third inning of the game.
The Red Sox extended the lead against Michael O'Neal in the top of the eighth, when Mike Meyers cranked a home run over the left field wall. Later in the inning, Ben Moore singled to score Guzman to make it 5-1. The homer was Meyers' third hit of the day, as he finished 3-for-4 with the homer and two runs scored.
Jake Drehoff sealed the win in the bottom of the ninth, striking out two and setting the Mudcats down in order.
The win was the ninth in a row for the Red Sox on the road, dating back to September 6, 2015, a club record in the Red Sox era. The Salem Avalanche won 11 in a row on the road from June 29-July 19, 2006. The seven-game winning streak is the longest for the Red Sox since an eight-game streak from August 7-17, 2014.
Salem heads home to try to keep the streak going as they begin a four-game series with the Winston-Salem Dash on Thursday at LewisGale Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. The Red Sox will send Ben Taylor (0-0, 1.00) to the mound, and he will be opposed by lefty Blair Walters (0-0, 2.00) of the Dash.
