Great Falls, MT - The Voyagers scored first but surrendered three runs in the 2nd to Billings and the Mustangs never looked back with a 7-2 series-opening victory Monday night at Dehler Park.
Great Falls (23-20, 1-4) still holds the season series lead against the Mustangs, having won five of seven. The Voyagers dropped to 7-13 on the road. Billings (19-24, 4-1) has won six of its last seven games, and improved to 13-11 at home.
Great Falls started the scoring with a run in the top of the 2nd. Micah Coffey led off the inning with a double off the wall in deep left. With one out, Jhoandro Alfaro brought Coffey in on a line drive single to right.
The Mustangs promptly replied with a three-run bottom of the 2nd as eight men came to the plate. Dylan Harris led off with a base hit to left-center. Drew Mount followed with a double. On the play, an errant throw back to second allowed Harris to score the tying run and Mount to take third. Jay Schuyler gave Billings a 2-1 lead with sacrifice fly to center. Urwin Juaquin then reached with a hit-by-pitch. Carlos Rivero singled. And, Zeek White made it 3-1 with an RBI double to the wall in left.
Billings pushed it to 5-1 with a two-run double by Mariel Bautista with two outs in the 4th. A two-run 7th made it 7-1 after RBI singles in the frame from Urwin Juaquin and Zeek White. The Voyagers scored a final run in the 9th on a two-out solo home run deep to right by Steele Walker. It was Walker's second homer of the season.
The Voyagers allowed a season-high tying 16 base hits and committed three errors. Dylan Harris led the Mustangs' attack with four hits and two runs scored. Zeek White, Mariel Bautista, and Carlos Rivero all had three hits. Logan Sowers posted a single and a double for Great Falls. Jhoandro Alfaro also had two hits.
Adrian Rodriguez picked up the win in his first start for Billings. Rodriguez (1-0) lasted six innings and gave up just one earned run on seven hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Jonathan Stiever took the loss. Stiever (0-1) worked two innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Great Falls closes out its brief two-game series at Billings Tuesday night. First pitch at Dehler Park is scheduled for 7:05. The Voyagers return home to face the Mustangs for a two-game set starting Wednesday night at Centene Stadium.
