Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

Effective today, Friday July 1, 2011 the American Red Cross Ulster and Dutchess County Chapters are consolidating into a single new chapter, with a new name. Ulster and Dutchess Counties are part of the Northeastern New York Region (ARCNENY), which covers 17 counties from Poughkeepsie to Plattsburgh, ARCNENY will go from five chapter locations to four.

"After a receiving a great number of thoughtful and creative suggestions for the new chapter's name, the winning entry is - The American Red Cross of the Mid-Hudson Valley," said ARCNENY Regional CEO Gary Striar.

The plans and timeline for the Ulster and Dutchess Chapters consolidation were announced in April, 2011.

The Ulster and Dutchess County Red Cross Chapters hosted a "Name the New Chapter Contest" from April to June, 2011.

The new chapter will be based at the current Dutchess County Chapter location in Poughkeepsie, NY and will have a single Board of Directors comprised of volunteers from both Ulster and Dutchess counties. One single Executive Director, Darryl Laffetry, will lead the new chapter.

The boards of the Dutchess and Ulster County Chapters met together on June 16, 2011 to review suggested chapter names and began the process of consolidating into one chapter. Eben Yager was named as Chair, Jeff Fredenberg as Vice Chair, and Michelle McCourt as Secretary. The Committee Chairs are to be determined.

"I look forward to working with the communities in both Ulster and Dutchess Counties to build an even stronger Red Cross in the Mid-Hudson Valley," said Eben Yager, Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter Board Chair and General Manager of the Hudson Valley Renegades. "As a resident of Ulster County, who works in Dutchess County, I am excited about the opportunities this consolidation will present."

Programs and services will be unaffected by this change. Services are administered and coordinated at a regional level, but are provided at the local level.

The Red Cross will continue to provide all of the services that it currently does in both Ulster and Dutchess Counties. It will still respond to disasters, provide health and safety training, collect blood and provide services to military members and their families. At some point in the future, the organization will look to secure a new facility to operate services for both counties.

This consolidation is part of a nationwide effort by the Red Cross to reduce unnecessary costs while maintaining vital services. Striar adds that the organizational advancements implemented so far have increased financial stability, created a stronger brand, invigorated fundraising systems and enhanced services and training programs for the public. Throughout the nation, the Red Cross is reducing costs in order to achieve a balanced budget and provide a better use of donor dollars.
