Crouse Pitches Tigers to Victory on 21st B-Day

NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers used a strong pitching performance from Matt Crouse and a big seventh inning to snap a three-game losing streak and take the finale from the Vermont Lake Monsters 6-5 on Friday night at Dodd Stadium.

The Tigers got the offense started early in the first inning. After a strikeout of the leadoff man Chad Wright to start things off, Vermont starter Jose Macias surrendered a single to P.J. Polk. The next batter Jason King rocketed a triple to right-center field that scored Polk and Dean Green followed with an RBI double to score King from third, putting Connecticut on top 2-0 in the opening frame.

Connecticut's bats would be held silent until they would explode for a four-run seventh inning.

After a leadoff double from Les Smith, Wright, Polk and King slapped three consecutive singles, Polk and King with RBI base hits, and the Tigers would extend their lead to 6-0.

Vermont once again would not go down without a fight. They would strike for five runs on four hits in the eighth inning to draw the Lake Monsters within one, but Daniel Bennett would come on in the ninth and

Matt Crouse earned his first professional win on his 21st birthday, working 5.1 scoreless innings, giving up just five hits and striking out four. Crouse has now pitched 11.1 consecutive scoreless innings.

Jose Macias suffered the loss for Vermont.

The Tigers will now host the Lowell Spinners, Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, for a two-game weekend series beginning tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM at Dodd Stadium.
