Red Claws Hold on to Beat Armor 97-96

February 13, 2011 - NBA G League (G League)
Maine Celtics News Release

PORTLAND, ME - The Maine Red Claws (14-21) held off a late surge by the visiting Springfield Armor (10-23) to take home a nail-biter, 97-96, at the Portland Expo in front of a sold out crowd.

After trailing for most of the game by as much 11 points, the Armor charged back late to tie the game with just under 7 minutes to go only to see Maine's Tiny Gallon take control and put down 8 key points in the 4th quarter. Springfield pulled to within one after a late technical to Maine's Mario West for a premature celebratory back flip in front of the Armor's bench with 1.4 seconds left on the clock but could not close the gap. In the two-year rivalry between the two clubs, Springfield has never won on the Red Claws' home court.

Springfield's top scorers today were forward Gavin Edwards with 21 and guard JamesOn Curry with 16. Scottie Reynolds, Vernon Goodridge, and Jerry Smith each added 13 points.

Maine's top scorers this afternoon were guard Jamar Smith with 20, forward Antonio Anderson with 14, and forward DeShawn Sims with 13.

Both teams will be idle until after the NBA Development League All-Star Break. The Red Claws will next be in action Thursday, February 24 when they host the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The game, during school vacation week, will have a special 1 PM start and feature the national act, the ZOOperstars, at halftime. The Armor will travel to Indiana to take on the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Tuesday, February 22 at 7 PM.

RED CLAWS HONOR 2011 NBA D-LEAGUE ALL-STAR DESHAWN SIMS: Just prior to tip off today, Red Claws President and General Manager Jon Jennings presented forward DeShawn Sims with a crystal trophy in recognition of Sims being named to the 2011 NBA D-League All-Star Game. Sims, 23, received a standing ovation from the sell-out home crowd.

Sims will participate in the February 19 NBA D-League All-Star Game in Los Angeles and is considered by many to be a leading candidate for the Rookie of the Year Award. The 2011 NBA Development League All-Star Game will be broadcast live on NBA TV next Saturday at 4 PM (ET). NBA TV can be found on channels 177 and 466 (HD) on Time Warner Cable in Maine and 170 and 790 (HD) on Time Warner Cable in New Hampshire.
